Hello. I have a Presonus firestudio and I was wondering how i would be able to add inputs to record more tracks. I would need individual tracks for each mic input so a mixer won't help me I don't think. Do I have to buy another firestudio??

thanks!

So you need more then the 8 channels on the Presonus unit.

I believe it has dual ADAT optical inputs which would allow another 16 channels of input using another pre amp type unit with optical output or ADAT lite pipe out. Most are 8 channels as well. And I'm thinking Presonus has a unit like that.

Look at their DigiMax series units. Decent bang for the buck and probably the easiest way to add channels to your unit.

okay thanks so much!

now, with that set up (16 inputs)
and 2 MXL 990 large diaphragm condensers, 2 MXL 991 pencil condensers, 1 Nady RSM-5 ribbon mic, 3 CAD TSM411 dynamic mics (snare, tom, floor tom), 1 CAD KBM412 large-diameter kick mic, 4 dynamic Digital Reference drum mics, 2 small overhead condensers, and an extra kick mic, how would you go about recording a small jazz combo? (If possible, all at the same time) The combo has a four piece drumkit, alto sax, trumpet, and upright bass (with trs jack).
If you can take the time to help me out that would be awesome! Sorry it's such a lengthy question.

Well, the drums should be easy. The kick mic on of course the kick. You don't say which Digital Reference mic's they are. But you can have your CAD set or the DR set to use on snare and tom's. Then hang the 2 MXL 991 pencil mic's for overheads on the drums.

The MXL 990's can be used for the horns, just experiment a bit on placement. The bass, just plug it in direct.

Your on the right track but cubase LE can only take 8 tracks in unless they changed it recently. So you would have to upgrade your Cubase.

With the firestudio you can hook up 2 digimax for a total of 24 inputs. Look close at the digimax 96k, 8 preamps and limiter/compressor chanels.

hmmm looks like you've outgrown LE, be that as it may, i think 8 channels is just fine and dandy for a jazz quartet....

i'd use no more than 3 mics on the drums one on sax, one, on trumpet, and one on the bass...that's 6 tracks, heck record the bass direct and throw in a random room mic in the corner, and i think you'll have everything you'll need....

as for which mic's to use for what.....i'll get back to ya on it.

remember, with jazz you want realism....so very little effects are needed....tiny bit of compression, and subtractive eq are about all yer gonna need.....

also if you can, find the best room you can to record in...hopefully big and woody.

plenty of excellent jazz recordings have been done with less than 3 mics total....it's all about the room, and placement
