hi,

i finally got around to recording something. there are some problems but i became swamped and lazy, so for now, it's shelved. if anyone wants to critique mixing, EQ, structure or anything, the song's at

www.nowhereradio.com/arti...785&alid=-1

i would take your wisdom to heart in these matters

Fortymile,
Question. There's an Eric Johnson song called "Forty Mile Town" I was just wondering, if your name had any bearing to the song, or if you knew what a forty mile town is? Because I would like to know.

no, i haven't heard of that song, but that's interesting. i took this name from a town in alaska which i'd seen mentioned in a jack london story at some point.

fortymile, you need to complete your link to NWR. The way it is will not take anybody anywhere.

I got there ok, just had to paste it...

Ok, well I listened to the song, sounds pretty good - here's some feedback for you:

The hats / cymbals are way too high in the mix - I'd drop them by a good 6dB.

The Guitar sounds very processed - I presume that it was recorded via a POD or something similar? If you haven't already then I would reccomend double tracking it, cutting at 1KHz by about 4-6dB and boosting at 650Khz and 2.4Khz by about 3dB.

During the intro (about 3 secs into the track), it sounds like things got a little bit too hot on the way in and there is a nice chunk of digital distortion - not the kinda thing you really want on a track, especially right at the start!

I really like the sample that came in at 3:10 - excellent stuff! However, i did feel that the links between sections need to be worked on to stop things "jumping" structure wise. (eg: at 1:19 and again at 3:14)

Loved the bass at 1:12 - excellent riffage :D

I've done a quick master of this track on headphones and have uploaded it to www.halogen.fsnet.co.uk/lofiho.mp3 -- the quality's not great (due to it being converted to MP3, mastered, and then converted back to MP3 again) - but you will get the idea.

wow thanks jues. that's a very interesting mix...i'm assuming you did the operations you mentioned in your text. the guitar definitely sounds better, chunkier. the harmonics are more audible too. you were right--it was a POD, and i didn't double-track it yet, but that's only because i still dont have my system...i'm working with limited trackage on a boss 8-track.

the guitar is def. better in your mix and the cymbals sound better quieter like this. i am trying to allow that snare to cut through, and i spent the most time on this mix trying to get the kick drum and the bass to complement each other and be audible, but theyre a bit harder to hear in this mix. i guess it's give and take. maybe i could try your recommendations and then just mix the guitar slightly lower than it is here. i'd get cleaner results EQing track by track, too, i bet.

i totally agree with what you said about transitions. it becomes so frustrating working on an 8-track that i literally just got tired of the whole thing and shelved it for now. thank you for the feedback. makes me want to keep working on it now that i can see that there's hope

p.s. is there some way i can download this re-mastering from your site so i can physically have it on my drive?

Yeah, just right click on the link and you will ahve the option to "Save Target As" - this will then allow you to save the MP-3 to your hard disk.

In regards to the remaster - no I did not do any of the things I mentioned in my list of reccomendations, I simply re-mastered the mix for you (applied some EQ and compression). You will undoubtedly achieve better results if you work track by track.

I'm just wondering why you don't port this project over to your PC so that you can work on it more in-depth?

duh--why didnt i think of that? i as trying to 'save target as' from the actual page where the file played.

i thought i heard compression in your mix. sounds great.

i cant really import to computer because i cant figure out how to sync cool edit pro to the midi time clock inside my boss br-8 eight track. i know its possible. i've read the help file. my computer just sucks. something about my settings/devices menu in cool edit is imcomplete. i would imagine it's too fragile an operation to eyeball and drag files, so all i can do right now is import the combined drum, bass, and guitar tracks as one file and master those as a single file. which is what you did. what i was saying-- as far as me EQing track by track-- is that i would re-record the drum, bass, and guitar tracks while changing my input settings--EQs and commpressions--to reflect your suggestions. i'd like to know how you set your compression and EQ on this mix, just for reference, if you remember.

thanks man

Nice work jues. You really breathed soem life into the guitar track, I must say, I am impressed. I assume you were using Waves Renisance.

Ozone DX -> Waves C1 -> Waves L1+

Fortymile, I will do a screen grab of the EQ curve I used, but bear in mind that I used a fair bit of multiband compression too.

thank you, thank you. speaking of compressors (i have indeed read the compression articles at dbmasters) this remix pretty much turns me on to the idea. i had heard so much about how compression can fatten up guitars but i had always assumed it was out of reach. i have various compressors as part of my triton's effects patches, but could never set them properly (and im not sure that theyre top quality--pretty noisy, so ive avoided them). but after hearing this remix im wondering if i should maybe spring for an outboard compressor/limiter. i'd be looking to spend under $100, though, and i see from the list that a few exist...the behringer looks ok for $69...but jues says here that he used multiband compression. i dont want to splurge on something that won't do the job. so i guess my question is--whats the scoop on multiband vs. (single band?) im not quite sure what i should buy.
