Does it matter if a final mix is burned to cd as audio, or data using TOAST

I just wanted a to know if burning a final mix using TOAST as data or audio matters. The song is to be transported off-site to be mastered. In other words, will burning it as an audio cd change the format of my mix in any way, or does it even matter.

Well, if you've been recording/mixing in 24 bit, when you burn the audio cd it will take it down to 16 bit and that could cause some quality loss.

Otherwise, it prolly wouldn't matter too much, but I think the less you change formats and stuff the less chance for some little bits of audio data to be lost here and there through conversion...

But ultimately, it probably wouldn't make too much difference (avg. listener won't hear any difference).

So I guess to avoid any audio quality loss, the best thing to do is burn it as a data cd. I agree with you about the average listener, but I want to produce the best quality sounding music that I possibly can. Thanks for the feedback Coolo, it is much appreciated.

correct me if I wrong but they are two entirely different things. CD audio is compatible with ALL CD players whereas data is compatible with SOME CD players and all computers. A CD audio track will play in everything but a data CD will only play in certain players.

I'm not burning the cd to play it on any audio device. The sole purpose of burning the cd is to transport it offsite to be mastered. I just wanted to confirm if an audio cd changes the format and we agreed that it might, but the average listener can't tell. So If I burn it as a data cd then I feel that it won't convert my mix from a .wav/24 bit file, and therfore I would have no quality loss. Do you agree with that BeerHunter?

I see! Yes, burn as data to preserve the original format. Burning to CD audio will convert to 16 bit.
