VPN Networking

Hi Guys,

I know this isn't necessarily the right place to post these kinds of questions but the networking forums are somewhat over my head and i have had no luck...so i turn to you techy people that have helped me out immensely in the past. i was hoping some of you guys might have some 'english' advice to give.

Basically, I have a business partner in Philly and another that lives near me in CT but far enough away. I want us all to be able to access 'a shared drive', and maybe do other things like video conference and remote assistance.

The 2 ways i could think to do this are either an FTP server, or a VPN Server. Maybe there are others but I am not a networking guru. :)

So basically, i tried doing the FileZilla thing with DynDNS and i kinda gave up because i still dont see how filezilla is supposed to talk to DynDNS and furthermore, i dont think i can get into my router settings to allow port forwarding (or something like that) because i have U-Verse which is a gateway that contains the modem and wireless router all in one. I think i have to call in to make changes and they wouldnt like me setting up a server im sure.

Then I started thinking VPN may be a better solution because we could not only run share drives, but we could also do remote assistance. The problem is i have Vista Home Premium and i dont think it comes with the Windows-based VPN server software.

My questions are: Has anyone set anything like this up and if so, what are good free programs to do so - i know there are a few but dont know which ones are easy and best? Also, any assistance in setting it up would be awesome too as i said, i am not too savvy with networking...yet :)

Thanks Gents
Matt

I would use an FTP for sharing files and probably something simple like MSN Live messenger for Voice, video, whiteboard sharing. Simple and cheap.

On the FTP, shared drive. Have you looked into something like a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive options. Something like the Simple Share set up. Or now there are a glut of them out there.

But I know Simple Share comes with some great software to set it up as an ftp server so nothing else on the network would be in the DMZ. Setting up a VPN would be cool, but with your modem/router set up I doubt that is going to work.

I would opt for a simple NAS drive set up and then rely on as Tripps stated, MSN live or one of the other myriad of programs out there for live chat.

Skype comes to mind.

Ditto on the hosting for FTP, and I like Skype and use it myself. The video features are pretty good to. Use it for chatting with my fiancee up in Iowa. .

If you were setting it up for your own personal stuff, I'd say go for it just for the learning experience. But since a business partner is involved, I have to recommend staying away, and going with the ftp-hosting solution. Less pain and headache in the long run I think. Setting up a server can be a complex and time consuming task when everything is taken into account.
