Boom! John Madden is retiring

For all of his quirks and unrelated tangents during the latter quarters of primetime football games, I still like Madden a lot. His series of video games taught me everything I know about football. Plus he was just born for commentating football games. If you ever need anybody to sit in a booth and yammer on and on about football for 3 1/2 hours, Madden is your guy. He's never at a loss for something to say. I'll definitely miss him.

At least he didn't hang on way past his prime like Somerall did. That guy looked almost as bad as Dick Clark by the time he retired. And speaking of Dick Clark, who keeps letting him do the New Year's Eve broadcast on national television? Oh man he's just skeletal looking, frightening. He creeps me out every time I see him on Jan 1st.

Anyways, I hope Madden still makes an occasional appearance as an analyst or something. He's got a lot to teach America about the game.

I didn't even realize that he is 73! His voice hasn't changed in 30 years.

Bummer! I watch the games he is announcing on. Now I guess I'll have no reason to watch football anymore at all since our Vikes suck the big one.

At least the Vikes have a lot of positions nailed down. They're really only a good QB and maybe a WR away from being a champ-caliber team.

This has been a tough stretch for us Chiefs fans though :(

Don't get me started. I'm so sick with football withdrawl it pathetic. Every day I pore over football sites, looking for the smallest tidbt of interesting info. I'm sick I tell ya. Sick.

But ya, I guess your right on the Vikes. There are times when they look really good, but then they simply fall apart at the seam's at other times.

i never understood complaints about madden. i recognize a real broadcaster when i hear one! and i actually liked his tangents. i don't know what to do without madden. he and michaels are great, but i can't really think of anyone else who is. on the news front, berman has got the voice and personality, but he's in the studios. the other people that are available for calling games or adding color right now all sort of suck.

i would many times watch a game i didn't care about specifically because madden and michaels were covering it.

i think that just like in baseball, you need ONE GUY who's slower. pittsburgh paired the crazy myron cope with i don't know who else, but the dynamic worked because there was a balance. in baseball, the pirates had lanny frattare, who had a voice that equated to summer. i don't know if he had an explosive counterpart or if he filled both roles, but all i know is that you need that guy, that guy who is not afraid to take it slow and easy.

now my problem is that michaels is a dynamic guy. he must therefore be paired with a guy who speaks more ponderously. and there isn't anyone that i can think of offhand, unless i'm missing something very obvious.

this is how it's always been. you need that complementarity.

and i really need flame to show up and talk to me about ringtones.

flame, you're my only hope. come on man.
