BX5a speaker broke in a month?!?!

Hey guys, I just got the M audio BX5a studio monitors about two months ago. In the first month of owning them I only used them for mixing about six or seven times. I went to turn them on a few days later and my left monitor sounded real strange, it had no high end. I called the support line and it turned out my tweeter was already blown somehow. I didn't understand this seeing as I used them a few times and I never blasted it loud.

So i had to send it away to M-audio.. took about three weeks to fix and I just got it back today. I asked one of the support people how I can prevent this from happening again and he told me I should never turn the monitors off because that's probably what caused it to blow..

My question is will leaving the monitors on all day and all night cause them to overheat or will it harm them in anyway? Does any one know how my tweeter could have blown so soon?

Tweeters blow. I used to keep a drawer full of NS10 tweeters at my old studio.

That said - It usually takes "something" to make it happen. Distorted signals are the major culprit. Even at low volume, it's a bad thing.

Powering them - For the most part it shouldn't hurt them to keep them on all the time. But you certainly shouldn't *need* to...

WOW... that's an excuse if I ever heard one. Seems to me that monitors would come with "standby" options if turning them on/off could actually blow out components. Now I can see this as a possibility if the case was turning them on/off WHILE music was being played loudly. Otherwise, it makes no sense... especially in this era of low-energy demand components. At least you got them fixed!!!

Yea I thought it sounded like an excuse.. I guess I'll just keep them on throughout the day then power them down for the night. I'm just worried that this will happen again. It's such a pain in the butt not having one of your monitors for over three weeks. Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I have the BX5A, the turning on and off thing should probably be paired with turning them all the way down. If you leave the volume up then turning on/off will cause a pop that could do some damage. I just got tired of reaching behind and turning them down.

Yep, the main thing is making certain the master volume from whatever source is going to them is down as well.

I have a pair of BX8a'a and have not had any trouble with them popping tweeters, and they have been abused prior to my owning them. I use them for my electronic drum kit as monitor's.

The M audio BX5A are active monitors. Just to get it out of the way: you're not amplifying them with an external amp are you? Just checking.
