My computer shuts down suddenly while converting audio

Hi, I am experiencing a very strange problem

I am using River Past Audio converter to convert audio from 64 kbps mp3 to 32 kbps mp3, on a Windows XP averatec 3150 laptop, and this laptop will suddenly shut down in the middle of the conversion with no warning. Virus scan comes out clean, and the windows is up to date with updates. Does anybody know what is wrong?

What is the CPU speed and how much ram do you have in it?

Also, are there any other programs running in the background while you are doing this?

Corrupted codec maybe? I had this problem a couple of years ago when converting videos. In the middle of the conversion process the lappy would, out of the blue, shut down. Worth a try to check.

Programs running in the background: Just Avast antivirus and PGPtray.

1.39GHz, 640MB Ram

I do not have any problems ripping audio from videos though, no matter many files I want to convert. I only have problems doing midi--> midi

In my past experience, a computer spontaneously shutting down can be a symptom of a bad stick of memory. You can try removing each stick one-by-one and see if the problem persists. I've had this happen to a couple of systems, although I haven't seen it happen for several years now.

If it happens only during that process, I would start trying a different piece of software.

Although hardware is usually the cause of shutdowns like that (power supply, Ram, Vid card), if using certain software is the only time you have experienced this, try a different software\codec.
