Recording in Cubase SX3 with a Toneport UX1 and gearbox

Ive been using toneport UX1 in conjunction with cubase SX3 for a while now, the only way ive been able to get any sound out of it is having the USB connected to my USB hub and the analog outs to the inputs on my Delta44. Seems an odd way to have to connect it seeing as many people have said its a USB interface.

However when I connect with just the USB, the signal gets to gearbox and cubase just fine but i cant seem to get any sound to come out of my monitor speakers (and yes I have tried switching the monitor button on and off in the channel strip in cubase).

This is why i use the analog outs too.

I have the master ASIO driver set to the Toneport one in Cubase but havent fiddled much with the buss options yet. (is this somehting I should change around?)

This gives a decent enough sound to record with but if I change the sound on gearbox, it doesn't affect the recorded sound on playback as a VST would do. So, if i want the changes to be in the recording I have to re-record the track again with the new settings.

Any ideas how I can achieve one or both of the following? :

1) To be able to use the UX1 as a soley USB interface where the signal from the ux1 goes to the Gearbox software via USB, gets processed by gearbox and then sent to Cubase where it is recorded and output through my monitor speakers.

2) To be able to use the UX1/gearbox in the style of a VST where i can record a guitar part into Cubase then go "Hmmm, needs more treble, a cut to the mid and a little more overdrive on the amp setting", change the settings on Gearbox and have them take effect on the recorded sound immediately as they are played back. Kinda like re-amping I guess.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as although Im making good use of the UX1 and gearbox, i dont think Im getting the full potential out of it.

I asked a similar question a while ago but am now much more familiar with my setup than i was then and should be able to get the gist of things better now.

thanks Dan, yeah had a read of that post and theres some useful stuff in there but one thing im having problems with is when I try and use it just via the USB, i get signal into gearbox and cubase (I can see the meters moving) but I cant figure out how to get that sound out from Cubase to my speakers, is that a routing issue in Cubase, gearbox or my Delta44 interface?

Im assuming this is how its supposed to be used as someone in the thread you linked mentioned that by connecting the monitor outs you got a different result.

Not sure either how I can effect the sound as you can with VSTs on a channel strip, if thats actually possible.

sorry to be a pain but I want to get this right

have upgraded to the latest software and driver versions of gearbox and podfarm, but when trying to use the VST files that come with the install the Podfarm one doesnt recognise my UX1 and gives me an error message saying "No device/authorised device is connected, PODFARM will act as standalone but will not process any sound" and with the gearbox it simply doesnt output any sounds or signal at all.

Im starting to get really sick of line6 as even there forum is no help and their instructions/user guides seem to have been written by someone who has never used this system as there seems to be loads of gaps or shortcomings in the descriptions of how to do things.

It's looking like the thing to do is buy a nice tube preamp to get a nice strong signal into my soundcard, then run i thru amplitube or guitar rig or something of that ilk. I dont want to have to do this as Ive got quite a lot of nice sounds out of the Line6 stuff but it's such a ballache to use that Im now considering my options

To use it like a plugin without using the UX1 as your Audio device for both Input & Output you will have to route signal back out to the UX 1 and record the Line Outs of the UX1 onto new tracks. For the plugin you can get Pod Farm activated by paying $49.95 on the Line6 site, Gearbox I don't think you can any longer upgrade to the plugin.

yup, finally gave in and paid for the privelage and Im quite glad I did, theres a lot of scope for stuff on podfarm and Ive already nailed some wicked tones for filthy doom.
ANyone else having the same problem as I was, read this and all will become clear.

ok, seeing as I already have the UX1 and Gearbox I was able to accquire a free upgrade to Podfarm and then found that as I got Podfarm for free I didnt mind paying a few quid to purchase the licence for the plug in.

having done that PodFarm works brilliantly in cubase as a plugin and is very useful for changing sounds around as it is non destructive, and also the fact that it allows you to effectively re-amp everything you've recorded then it' very useful.

So to anyone out there wondering how to get this stuff set up:

Assuming you have your Line 6 hardware setup and connected correctly;
(USB connected to PC, analog outs connected to your monitors/soundcard, levels set and signals routed correctly),
Then follow these steps to achieve greatness

1) download PodFarm, the plugin for Gearbox is no longer available since Podfarm came on sale so the only way to get this set up as described above is with PodFarm

2) Install Podfarm and all relevant drivers, ensuring everything is up to date - do this with Line6 Monkey updater

3) Purchase and install the licence for the Plugin from the Line6 website or Monkey updater

Your Podfarm will now be operational as a standalone program, and as a plugin in your DAW (cubase, logic etc)

4) Enter your DAW and set the master ASIO driver to the one related to your Line 6 hardware, eg if you are using a Tone Port UX1, set the master ASIO driver to
"ASIO Toneport UX1".

5) Ensure that your input and output busses are set correctly to travel through the correct hardware

6) Open the VST/inserts section of the channel strip you wish to record your guitar on (in Cubase this is done by clicking the button marked "e"

7) Loacte the PodFarm plugin from the drop down list that appears when you click on an empty VST slot

8) Put a sound together on PodFarm and get recording! How you do that is up to you, Im not gonna go into basic recording theory - you can bore yourselves with that

Remember, even though the *.dll file shows up in PodFarm's VST folder, you cannot use the plugin until you have purchased and downloaded the licence which will allow you to use it as a plugin in your particular DAW. You can load it up in your DAW to your heart's contrent but you will not get any sound from it until you buy the licence.

I'm not sure why Line 6 have done this, seems a little pointless giving you something you can't use unless you purchase something else, I would have thought it more obvious not to include the plugin and sell it to you, thus eliminating some confusion on the part of users, and also the need for a licence as people would just have to download the plugin.

That said, even without the plugin and licence, PodFarm is still very versatile as a standalone aplication and gives you everything you need to record into your DAW, the only difference being that your DAW receives the wet signal with all the effects and that is what is recorded, as opposed to using it as a plugin where your DAW receives only the dry signal and the effects are added via the inserts section / FX loop.

If you want to change the sound when not using the plugin, you will have to rerecord the part once you have made the necessary adjustments.

Hope this is of use to people who were having the same trouble as I was

Nicely done Beard indeed.

Glad you sussed it out and are up and running with it.

Line 6 gear is something that has been used around here since the very first version of the little Bean hit the market. I now sport both a fully loaded PODxt and the UX2, running Gearbox. My set up allows me to re amp without the need for the pluggin, but for many that isn't possible and the old Gearbox and the new PODFarm are fantastic for this.

But glad its working out for ya, and thanx for writing it out for others to see.

No worries, seems to be the way with Line 6 products, I've used Spider II amp heads, PODs and the DL4. They seem really finicky and illogical to begin with, but it's just u need to spend more time with em than other products, once u figure it out they work a treat
