External HD problem

I have a huge amount of stuff on an external hard drive. I just got a new computer...and plugged it in and did the windows search for drivers thing. it said it couldnt find any, so i just skipped it.
now ive gone and found drivers for it online. when i plug my HD into the computer it just doesnt recognize it at all. pretends like the HD just doesnt exist.
so im thinking i have to go and find the drivers that XP installed when i promted me the first time and delete them. then reinstall. Where do i find them? i searched through Devise manager and couldnt find them...
its a MAXTOR firewire HD.
