I have a friend who wishes to produce a video par to the quality that one would expect from say that produced by these hunting shows. Mr. Ted productions comes to mind.

Obviously he doesn't want some truck mounted monster used by Warner Bros., but wants better quailty that a handycam.

Any ideas?

Look for a camera with at least a 3 chip CCD.

I think zek is one of the few who might know about that stuff. Possibly Hue as well. I know he and the Went film odd stuff and the Went might have a good camera for that.

I have been seeing the Canon GL2's on craigslist for around $1000. They are not high def but are fantastic cameras and accept many different lenses. I was thinking about trying to talk the band into buying one I saw so we can shoot better videos of our shows.

Well, ... whats the budget? :)

There's about a $500K camera budget difference between Warner and Youtube :)

More importantly is whats the intended distribution... if you have a channel lined up they should have a 'Red Book' which lists the technical standards for their programming...almost everyone is a midlevel HD now...and some will get very specific about which cameras they do accept as 'Being HD'

If for DVD or Internet then you get a lot more leeway :)

One camera I see getting recommend for 'nature stuff' is the Sony PWM EX3:

Thanks much gentlemen!

I will run these suggestions bye my cohort. The distribution is DVD to be sold at like Cabellas or BassPro etc. According to my cohort he has the distribution lined up. As far as the budget; I have no idea. My part in this is lining up the talent and oversight of the production. I met the guy when I was doing landscaping. I put in a patio system for him that cost more than my house but ya never know, he may have a finite number in mind per a camera. So far he just asked to research the things.

SWEEEET!!!

40 yards on a turkey. How old is he? That is a killer shot for sure. I've made some long shots before, but not at a turkey!

Oh Geoff, I miss mine :(

Best I can do now is Sylvester and Sasha, AR and AK respectively. Both have been neutered; no third position on the switch. Domesticated as it were or in newspeak they are both an SUR Sport Utility Rifle :)

Ya noise, he's 15 now. Makes me sick. Everything I put in his hands he blasts the crap out of stuff. First time I handed him my nine he was dancin cans at 20 yards. His dad and I just shrug our sholders. His dad is pretty deadly with the laser on Sylvester from the hip. I seem to still do better with iron sights on Sylvester.

Sylvester has a laser on him????

I thought I was a bit over indulgent at times, but a laser on Sylvester!

I'm just jealous.

Ray has been like that lately. 16 in a week and this year was his first time with a shotgun. Did the shotgun merit badge for kicks thinking he would flop. The kid shoots 34 out of 35 clays after only shooting a damn shotgun during the class for 4 days!

But indeed, I would put him up with the bow as well. I think some kids just seem to have a knack for it. Cause I know I didn't spend that much time teaching them to shoot bow, and both Tuna and Ray are pretty good with it.

I still like breaking out my 95lb Bear. It was one of the first compounds out and has no sites. The first year I took some of the scouts out shooting bow and brought that thing. A walking animal target course and there is a boar target that is maybe a 60 yard downhill shot. I nailed it with the big Bear and one of the kids hands me their little compound and says to hit it with that.

I just pointed the thing straight out over the hill and let fly. Damn if it didn't stick the thing right in the neck. I didn't bother to tell them it was a one in a million shot. I just puffed up and let them all think it was skill.

All this talk, now I gotta go shoot at the thumpers running in the snow. Rabbit stew, yum yum!

That's good for sure! Both per Ray and your shot. I think you're right; kinda a knack gig. It's wierd. Sandy is fubar with the nine, ok with Sylvester, but she just fell in love with the wood stock and forearm on Sasha and likes the little kick "its got a little kick to it like it should have"; and be darned if she isn't the best with him. Left the red dot on accidentaly and was dead last we shot. Iorn sights are blocked by the mounting system. She tore the heck out of a paper plate regardless. Go figgure. I was doumbfounded.

Gotta comment too..... Bunnystew does sound like reallllly good! Went down to big MO to visit the kids over Thanksgiving. Farm fresh eggs, venison, off the wing turkey. Got home and pulled out some psedo palatable synthetic substance from Krogers. Instant reaction.... What the hell am I doing?

Man, I remember the days when we used to keep nothing but fresh meat. All hunting booty. Nary a trace of store bought meat in the freezer. I wish I had time to go back to that. I hate all this over processed crap.

Yup. As time goes by fewer things can be done for oneself it seems. Really limits ones choices as to what one gets and how one gets it. There are a couple of pieces of furnature I'd like to make. Damn hard to find any good wood. Really don't care for a lot of the designs I see made with decent wood, to say nothing of the cost. So I guess you get what you don't want and pay more for it. It's a feature!

Ya, now you just can't go out and pop a load of rabbits for stew meat. Or squirrel or what have you.

And ya, it really sucks today what things cost that should not cost that much.

OK, here goes. I am making a mess out of this post. My intuition saz that I must be misspelling a lot of words. I have IE7-Pro now and the narcissistic little bastard spell checks for me! Woooohoooo now I can look entellegent!

Just testing.

Firefox has had that for a long time now. I love it. Even though I don't always like it doing that it has helped me out a bunch.

Now if it could work on my bad grammar I would really be impressed.

Buy a Canon Vixia HV30 from Amazon. It's a HD video camera, and it's a little pricy but actually cheap for the quality.

If this is direct to DVD or internet distribution the HV30 would probably work great, as it gets good reviews.

However HDV is not HD no matter how many pixels there are. ... and thats an easy excuse for broadcasters to toss it in the bin. At that point larger sensor and the individual compression algorithms come into play as to whether the footage can stand up to being jammed though the cable system.
