Tube vocal mic under $800 reccomendations?

I need something that adds a natural warmth to male vocals, and yet can sound great recording higher dB screams... Any suggestions? I know tube mics are pricey, but I don't just have a few grand to drop on a mic.

Also, I don't know if this relates? but What would be the tonal or sonic differences between A.) getting a decent solid state mic and coupling it with a decent tube preamp. verses B.) A tube mic running straight into the back of my Digi002 ?

Just took a quick look on ebay. I found a few Neumann mic's in your price range.

How about a matched pair for $599 here.

The K58 works great. I'm not sure how they can sell these so cheap but I own about 6 of their mic's including a K6 ribbon and love them.

Have you tried a SM7b...? No tubes (which IMO, is a very good thing 90% of the time), but seems in line with what you're looking for (not to mention that it's one of the greatest vocal mics of all time).

Yea dude! For the bucks, it sounds like a pretty good choice. Not that I know you, or your recordings but you stand by them huh? For the price it almost seems too good to be true. $300; might as well give it a shot. Thanks for the input.

SM57b, I think I may have seen this one floating around some studios around here. Without the spongy pop filter does it have a very "soup can" look to it? and it handles higer dB scream type vox well huh?.. Hey for the price I can pick up a Karma tube cond. and an SM7b for right around the same price as I were orig. looking to spend on a single mic. Thanks again guys! This forum is great for a guy like myself who is trying to take audio from a hobby into a lifestyle.

I actually keep one here (a mastering facility).

Why would I need a vocal mic at a mastering facility? Believe it or not, it comes up here and there. If a U87 would be a better choice, I'd have a U87 here.* But it's not a question of how much the mic costs -- It's a matter of the more flexible and better sounding mic.

Don't get me wrong - Condensers have their place for some vocals -- Just not 90% of them.

And yes - as always - ANY mic is only as good as the preamp driving it

[i]* I actually keep a rather "boutiquish" modified U87 'clone' here also - Tracked palmas with it just a couple weeks ago for a flamenco record. It's also wonderful for "instrumental" vocals (where the vocals are more 'instrumental' in application - think opera, Mariah, Celine, etc). But for the average pop, rock, rap, HH -- Any sort of more aggressive vocal, give me a 7b and a decent preamp almost every time.

I have the Rode K2 and love it. Up close it is warm for my softer acoustic work and I just step back a few more inches for other musical types.

It is tube, with selectable patterns and so far has been rock solid for about two years.

SM7b would be a great addition to my so far miniscule collection.
