My buddy is looking at higher end mixers. Beit for live or recording...

Two he has in mind are:

MIDAS: Venice 320

TOFT: ATB32

What are your opinions of the two. And which would you recommend?

The Midas is a good board. But, I do have a few issues with it.

Mainly the way it is laid out. the first two Aux sends are fixed Pre. Three and four are fixed Post. And five and six are switchable Pre or Post. And One through four have to go the FX and monitor faders for level. Not the best IMHO.

I am not that familiar with the TOFT board. Looking at the specs on line are impressive. But that tells you nothing on how it sounds. One thing that causes me concern on it is the term "Vintage EQ". So what does that mean? Lots of noise? A nice little 10k hiss at -15dB?

Not knowing the board or their EQ's, I can't really give you an opinion on that. Sorry.

He means it's his (Malcom Toft's) EQ. That means it's worth the price of the board all by itself.

I don't know why he uses "vintage" - Although I suppose his original pieces (which all of his others are based on) are certainly "vintage" enough...

Even the EQ's on his "cheapie" stuff (the ATC2 for example) are amazing...

Cool! I take that the peramps are pretty special as well? Not being from the recording world, I have never heard of Malcom Toft. But, I am going to take it for granted that his gear is something special.

Looking over the layout of the board, I find it Superior to the Midas. Just the fact that you have 8 sub groups to the Midas four. The only thing that I didn't find is whether the Aux's are switchable between pre or post.

Either way CynicEidolon, I think your better off going with the TOFT. Based solely on lay out alone.

Rob, I think there are 4 that are switchable and 4 that aren't.

And, yeah. I think we are going to go with Toft. Little more expensive, but there is just too many good things about it.

Thanks for the input guys. :)

A pioneer in modern audio electronics (and a helluvan engineer). All the classic Trident stuff was his design (and even the ATC's reflect that).

(a moment passes)

Here: toftaudio.com/history.html

Think of him as the David Hill of the 70's (even though Dave Hill was working on Summit designs in the 70's if I'm not mistaken).

The preamps... I wouldn't call them "special" but "very nice" - Definitely a step up from most boards in that budget range.

Sorry I didn't get here sooner. I will second or third I guess the Toft board. I did an install of the 32 awhile back and got to work on it for a short time. Lovely board. I would be putting one in here when the time comes. Good price and wonderful sound.

That is unless I can find one of the older Tridents for a good price and in good shape.

Interesting read MassiveMaster. Thanks for the info.

I am never that acquainted with names of the pioneers that came before us. Other then the name you just can't escape. Such as Robert Schofeild. And (here in the Philly area) The Gately's.

I have heard of the Trident board before. But, have never mixed on one. Not to much demand for them in the live application.

Also took a peak at your Bio. Very impressive. Seems that you have been around the block a few times. And an equally impressive studio set up. Good to have you on board here at the HRC.

OK, I guess after the few weeks you have been here you would think I would have checked it out. I normally do. :-)

I must agree, very nice looking place indeed. And yes I browsed through the site a bit to gander at what I would call a resume. Nice credits indeed.

But a nice clean and tidy looking place. I'm used to a huge mess to keep the creative juices flowing.

I'll have to drop back and check out the HD page or your personal page I guess. And give a listen to a few samples as well.

And a long overdue welcome to HRC.

I'll pop a banner up in a few places as well for you.

Thanks for the welcome. :-)

It's actually not as neat & clean as it looks sometimes... I end up doing a lot of unattended work and... well, I let the place go for several days at a time. And then I spend an entire evening cleaning the place up for someone who's actually sitting in for a while. Which is good, otherwise I'd never clean anything. :-)

Except the bike... I keep that pretty clean. New photos of that up soon! :-)

Haha. I know how the cluttered thing goes.

We have decided to probably finance the board so, hopefull it will be here in a few weeks to a month. :)

You don't think this place is called PigPen for nothing do you? Although it is now much cleaner down here then it has been in 10 years, the mix room is once again covered with paperwork and letters from my son Tuna who is finishing basic at Ft. LeonardWood. So clutter is nothing new here.
But ya, if it isn't a bit cluttered that means you are not busy so I guess I'll just live with it.

But ya, it does look like you have a wonderful set up for sure.

A tip of my hat an a hearty handshake to your son. It is a reasonably wonderful setup I suppose - and it would never be possible if it wasn't for generation after generation of people like that who are willing to throw down for the U.S. of A.

Sorry - I always get a little carried away when anyone mentions the U.S. Military...

Thanx Massive, much appreciated. I'll pass that along to him when we get there. He hasn't been able to see any of you newer guys since he has been gone. But I'll surely give him the word.

And no problem getting carried away. I as well do, especially now.
