Hey ya'll
I've had to get back into my playing(guitar) and singing for this band im in.
I've always been pretty good at it, but the demands of this band vocaly and guitar wise are definatley up a level.

im wondering if there is anyone that knows of tips and tricks? Weather they've used them in the past or are currently using.

i guess im looking for a necessary fundumental i am unaware of, or i've missed at some point.

im playing metal, but really it doesnt matter what music it is...trying to sing and literally play "straight through" "off time bits" (vocals against guitars) in songs can be very tricky.

keen for some input. if i havent explained it well let me know and i'll try again.
Wasnt sure where to put this question so i thought here is a good a place than any.
Cheers.

That can definitely be very tricky, but I don't think there are any tricks to it. Simply practice doing the riff and singing to it. It helps knowing the riff so well that you don't have to think about it, kind of like muscle memory type deal. Otherwise, practice, practice, practice.

Yes it is definately muscle memory. Practice is the only way that I know of.

Thirded. Whenever I have a tricky riff where I have a tough time singing along, I play the guitar part until it is second nature and make sure I know the lyrics so well that I don't even have to think about them. Alas, some songs are still tricky and it just takes practive with alot of trial and error to figure out when to sing during that odd picking part. Muscle memory indeed.

Its like playing drums and singing. As BH stated it is all about muscle memory, and adjusting to the point that you don't have to think about one of the things you are doing. Reggae was like that for me in the beginning, playing guitar and singing was odd at first. Then simply letting the guitar do its thing and concentrating on the vocal worked for me. But as stated above. It is all practice that makes it work in the long run.

i think the prob im having is i havent memroized the lyrics well enough and im thinking too much about em.
i am also stretching the abilites of human kind with this music in regards to singing and playing.
Its up there with difficult anyway.

so ok, will keep chippin away at it.
I have had a real good listen to some tracks of other metal bands i like that sing and play, and there are more little tricks and ways of "not playing" in there than any actual pattern playing or techniques.
where it becomes difficult, the guitar kinda blends more with the bass and then gets back into it as soon as possible. So the other guitar cover it. Im talking out there riffs or off time to the vox stuff. one still has to play everything to a certain extent.
cheers guys.

Yeah, even having to think about the lyrics can throw the whole thing into a nosedive. You may find that right now you might need to dumb a few parts down, but after playing it 10,000 times you may find yourself more capable and can bump em back up.
