I just recorded this piece not 3 hours ago with one of the most amazing mics I have ever used (for the price.)
I'm very proud of the way this quick little piece sounds. I spent maybe 20 mins on this rough mix. It's kinda quiet but sounds awesome (I think)
check it out...

Jun 18, 2008 10:28 pm I just listened to it, and while ya the recording sounds awesome, I can't really tell what you used the mic on haha.
But yeah, I've got an old beat up 990 that's still alive and kickin. It's my secret weapons believe it or not. When the senhieser, akg, and shure ain't doin it, I bring out the MXL.

Jun 19, 2008 01:35 am I assume you used it on the acoustic guitars, anything else? It really does sound great though, nice job.

Jun 20, 2008 07:38 pm yeah it's just on the acoustics. (and the reversed/distorted acoustic in the lead)
the rest are vst's believe it or not.

Jun 21, 2008 01:48 pm I have the 990 as well as the larger 992, both are great mic's IMO especially for the price.

Jun 24, 2008 12:10 pm I have one of those kits with the 990 and the 991 for $99.00.
I love these mics.
The big one can be a little harsh if you add any top end EQ, but I think it's a great microphone.

Jun 26, 2008 03:14 am I'd be down for doing a recording using only one 990 to capture it.

Jun 26, 2008 12:53 pm Darnit, now I wanna pick up a 990 :) Anyone use em on OH's? I have always used SDC;s but for some of the acoustic stuff I do, I think LDC's might sound better and the price is definitely right.

Jun 26, 2008 03:09 pm I've used the 990 as an overhead a couple of times. They're alright for that, depending on what you're recording. I mainly put mine in front of singers and as room mics, but i've also mic'd guitar cabs with em.

Jun 30, 2008 09:13 pm Actually Loki I think some guy did that on an award winning album somewhere. (The one 990 thing)
He even did the drums by doing multiple takes of them (changing mic position each time) I think he did it to prove a point that a cheap mic doesn't mean crap, and no, you don't HAVE to have a 3000 $ mic to make a record.

Jul 01, 2008 10:27 pm Ya, I love using cheap mic's. Sometimes they have the coolest sound around. Ya, I've got a some expensive fancy mic's, but as well I love the odd cheap stuff. I still have this 57 knock off sort of thing from Audio Technica, the Xm4 that was made in Taiwan. The front screen is knocked off to open it up more. But the cool thing is that at low volumes it is this dirty sounding nasty rough ugly thing. But put it in front of something loud or in front of a screamer and it is like it has its own little gain boost going on. It drives up this warm signal that is very unique. I've got a fistful of 58 knock offs as well that are similar. They each have their own flavor. And all these mic's were picked up used for less then $20 each.
And ya, I use them for all kinds of stuff.
