What compression ratio is good for vocals...

May 27, 2008 10:01 am not that this is the answer you want to hear, but, it totally depends on the vocalist a heavy metal screamer you'll want to clamp down on, a soft spoken ballad singer you may not want to so much...
Short answer "it depends".

May 27, 2008 12:15 pm Not at all. If your voice is heavy you jack the ratio up to control the range of volume and tame the peaks.
Softer singers you go with a smaller ratio to allow more dynamics through.
Not set in stone, but I would say more common than not.

Jun 05, 2008 09:00 am It's an art, really. Threashold and ratio work together to determine how much of the louder portions of the signal you want to tame and by what degree you want to tame them. I really don't know any way to circumvent the frustration of learning by doing with a compresser as that is how I learned. I toyed with it and listened...closely.
