What compression ratio is good for vocals...

not that this is the answer you want to hear, but, it totally depends on the vocalist a heavy metal screamer you'll want to clamp down on, a soft spoken ballad singer you may not want to so much...

Short answer "it depends".

So if my voice is soft more compression and if its heavy less compression?

Not at all. If your voice is heavy you jack the ratio up to control the range of volume and tame the peaks.

Softer singers you go with a smaller ratio to allow more dynamics through.

Not set in stone, but I would say more common than not.

It's an art, really. Threashold and ratio work together to determine how much of the louder portions of the signal you want to tame and by what degree you want to tame them. I really don't know any way to circumvent the frustration of learning by doing with a compresser as that is how I learned. I toyed with it and listened...closely.
