Rare opportunity

Hi all,

I have the rare opportunity this weekend to receive a graduation gift from my parents (gettng my B.A. in Audio Engineering). It's not something they can do all the time but they want to treat me ($500 - $1000). So, I'm wondering what you all might recommend for my next gear purchase, as I'm torn as to what to ask for. Here's a quick summary of my gear: Pentium D PC (ample memory all around); roland vs 1880 hard disc recorder, Reason 2.5, pretty basic midi keyboard, and krk rokit 5s. I write mostly electronic music but do compose in almost every other style of music. I don't really need a new keyboard or to upgrade to a higher version of Reason just yet. But I have thought mostly about getting a version of ProTools as I would like to be able to do better audio editing and sync video to audio easier, but I'm not sure which verson. For the dollar amount I'm looking at, is there other recording software or any other gear I should be looking at asking for?
Thanks.

I know some doubt it, but I love adobe audition. I know they have video editing built in but I have never used it before. On the audio editing side, it is simple to use but has plenty of advanced features. Version 3 implemented the VSTi standard but that is another feature I don't use so I have not upgraded yet. I think at $350 it's a great application.

The features you are interested in would at least be worth reading about. I'd suggest reading from people who have actually used it vs. the audio forums where people just tend to bash certain products no matter if they have used them or not.

And my second suggestion... A man can never have to many mics. $500-1000 could buy a really nice upgrade perhaps? Matched pair of tube LDC's? Oooohhh man :)

First, congradulations!

Second, if you still have an active student ID, look into accedemic software. It is usually 40 to 60 percent off and the exact same software as is sold as standard retail.

I guess with the power of that student ID I would be reviewing software for sure.

Last, hell I don't know. Whatever you want most. Enjoy!

Thanks for the input so far. I hadn't even heard of Adobe's Audition, so I'm definitely going to check that out to start. Don't think my student ID is still good but will check into it for sure.

Sync sound is just painfully easy in practically everything nowadays...

being a 'gift' I would focus on something that isn't going to expire or need to be 'repurchased' like software...

a safe bet is mics... high end mics pretty much never go out of style at anything other than professional production houses...

It really depends on what you want to actually do... another option is to use it as an investment in a 'project'... ie pay for pressing professional CD's... if you're into video editing you could do an short film (actually buy an super8 camera, film, process, telecine, then edit and submit to festivals... etc. (of course learn to shoot on film a bit beforehand :) )... I'm helping a guy with a 5min short super8 film and it was about $1K... but cameras are like $15... $40 for a 5min roll which includes processing on new film... etc... it can be done cheap... actually some windup MOS 16mm cameras go for less than $50...
