KRK RP-5 Rokit PWRD monitors

So I finally saved up enough dough to buy a good set of monitors and with about 600$ I figure I have a few options at the moment.

I'm not asking for opinions or for whats best; those questions are subjective. My question is wether or not these monitors need the RP-10 Sub or not. I've heard ALOT of music through the RP-8 Rokits, and though thought them a bit too heavy on the bass end of things, I consider them to be the best option in my price range. I'm hoping to get an AKG Perception 220 with the money left over. I'll be spending 160$ for the RP-5 monitors, + a few cables I've needed for a while (my buddy works at guitar center and has agreed to help me out with his discount. Sorry to Noize and DB if this is an unacceptable mention- I know how you feel about 'hacked' anything, but I can't turn down a deep discount if I can get one; specially for this kind of product!)

Anywho, I'm planning the 47 mile trek to guitar center next week and I'm wondering if anyone has heard these monitors before, and if so could give me some input, or personal favorites for monitors in the 3-600$ range at this point.

I have much more than 600$, but I'm saving vigoriously for a Kurzweil 88 Key Stage Piano/studio midi contoroller.

I am a relative newbie to recording on a 'professional' level, so I'm simply a hobbyist with dreams. So there's my agenda. See my profile, for it is filled out and may answer some questions.

if it's the ones with the 8" drivers, and you're in a relatively small room, i'd say pass on the sub....but i think the rp5's are smaller, so a sub might be justified...i've found it best to mix without the sub, then turn it on just to check things down there every once and a while....i'd say start without and see how well things translate.

my two cents....

I have M-Audio 5"s (BX5A) and love them but... I could use a sub to help with the low end mixing. Doing my music I think the 8" would have been perfect for my room and stylings with no need for a sub.

I use the KRK Rp5's which work great by themselves but after about a month or two of use I bought the rp10 sub. I feel that you just don't get enough low end coverage out of the rp5's alone. I am fully happy with the setup after I added the sub and a set of Auralex isolation pads.

Keith, a discount is a discount no matter were it comes from. I'll still hit GC if needed, but Ben usually has anything I need for the most part or can get it so I don't get there that often. I shopped GC alot back in the day when I had several buddies that worked there and got the discount on several large ticket items. So no beef at all there.

The Rp5's have a pretty good range on their own really. Tuna has the Bx5a as well and they work pretty well without a sub for now. Granted they are not like my KRK K-Roks but they are not weak in the low end at all.

And oh ya, a discount is definitely not a hck by any means. :-)

I guess my suggestion would be to bring a CD you know like the back of your hand and bring it with and make the guy set the EQ flat as a pancake, flatter actually. Then listen hard to what they sound like, it should give you a very good idea of what they can do without a sub.

I love my RP5s. Now I have never heard them with a sub, but I think they sound pretty darn good on their own. I'm sure a sub might help get some added low end, but I'm happy enough with the way they sound on their own.

Sorry it's been so long, just been absolutely slammed at work; got a promotion and I've been devoting all my time to it.

Anywho, I managed to make it out to GC on Tuesday and sampled the RP-5's long and hard and determined that they're just not for me. I put a few other brands through their paces, and the ones I've settled on are a pair of Yamaha HS50M's. They're twice the price of the RP-5's, but they sound much better to my taste, taking into consideration the environment I'll be using them in and such. I havn't set these bad boys up yet, but when I do I'll be sure to give a full review after I've had them a while.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Those are the newer version of the standard made by Yamaha for years, the NS10. They were and still are considered a standard in many places because if you can make something sound good on them it will sound good anywhere. Although the HS50M is a much improved version of it they are still made to work much the same. But they have a much better bottom end picture and are much truer in sound to compete with todays near fields.

Good choice indeed.

HUGE oversight;

These Yamaha monitors are rear ported, which for my tiny 12x12 room, just doesn't work. They sing loud and true, but the mids and bass freqs are just too distorted in this environment for me to hold onto them.

I may end up falling back on the KRK RP-5s, but seeing as I'm already in the hole more than they cost, I might as well try for a set in the price range I'm at already.

There's a set of Events as well as a set of Tannoys in the used section of my buddies GC store that I can trade them out for strait up, but I'm still waiting to hear them.

Word to the wise, make porting a number one consideration, right up there with over all sound quality, because once you bring them home, they may surprise you. This was basically the only thing I didn't think about before hand and I'm now realizing that 20/20 hindsight sucks more than picture perfect foresight.

I just picked up these Yorkville monitors on the weekend. So far I think they are awesome. The were about $260 each.

Ouch, sorry to hear the Keith. But ya, the ones BH just got are pretty decent for sure. I would put them up near the KRK's for sure.

Be careful with the Tannoys as well. They can be very glassy sounding and sometimes cepending on the model will head near the sound of a HiFi speaker, which are not very flat. Events are quite flat for the most part though and have a pretty decent bottom on them.
