I am going to buy a new desk top computer and I plan to setup my own basic home recording studio for my pleasure only. It seems that all new computers are now equipped with Vista. My question is can I dump Vista and load my own "legal" XP without voiding the warranty?
Has anyone else done this with good results?
Thank you very much, Dave

Apr 30, 2008 05:36 pm Personally, I wouldn't worry about the warranty at all. If they're going to warranty the software, and support it, then they'll be on the phone with you more using vista, than using XP.
You may have to contact MS to get your license cleared from a previous PC. You can't just add it to a new PC. It's got to be cleared from the old one (somehow).
Otherwise, I'd certainly do it.
I just got a Dell PC for work (about 1-2 months ago) and it's got XP pre-installed.

May 04, 2008 12:31 am I have dumped Vista and installed XP on a few PC's for others without any problems. As long as there are not multiple PC's checking and updating on the same license you should be OK.

May 06, 2008 03:46 am If you want to go with XP on a new computer make sure sure you track down the drivers you'll need first, other than that you shouldn't have any problems. But before you go to all the trouble try it with Vista first you might be surprised. As long as your audio device has good Vista drivers available and your DAW software is compatible it works just as well as XP.
