Hi guys, back again, i completely forgot the address of this place since reinstalling windows but now i have found you and can pester you some more ha ha.

What is the best program to use for recording vocals and occasionally instruments - i use the new adobe audition v3.0 and have found that really good, but i want something that will give me a really good professional sound...maybe some sort of mastering program??? is there such thing as a mastering program that i record into or do i record on one program, save wav files and then mix in the mastering program?

if you understand what im talking about thats great because i dont but it makes sense in my head... thank you! :)

I wouldn't be hesitant at all to use AA V3.0 to track, to mix, and to master in.

You can add mastering type plugins, to help you master.

I usually track in my program, mix in the program, render this project down to stereo wave file, then import the file back into my program by itself, and perform my mastering type functions, then render again to 16/44.1

This can be done in other programs, but doesn't need to be.

Yeah, you are definitely talking about mastering.

You can use audition and get plugins to do it, or you could purchase a wave editing standalone application.

Reocrding in a different program is not going to give you better results though, audition is more than up to the task. Also, when I master in audition I don't have to convert as it has built in cd burning that converts and dithers and does a nice job of it.

To master...

I get my mix in audition how I want, I make my volume peak around -6db and then export\mixdown. Then comes harmonic balancing and adding some air with reverb (I use harbal for this, you should check it out). I then use a maximizer to bring the volume up to standard.

I spent some money and bought the waves plugins but there are plenty of freebies around the web. I also use Izotope Ozone 3 from time to time, it used to do more damge than good, but now that I understand it better it's a decent mastering plugin.

Oh yeah, there are some mastering walkthroughs on the site that really helped. Basically they apply to whatever program your using, not just audition. They are simply techniques and guidlines.

so when you say you mixdown do you mixdown the complete track ie..instrumental and vocals all as one...then export the complete wav file into harbal? i only just heard about this program...it has gotten me intrigued tofind out more lol..

there are mastering sections in adobe...if i was mixdown my complete track instrumental and vocals, then use the mastering part in adobe i wonder whether that would have any effect or should i only apply the mastering effect to the vocals? im slightly confused even where to start...

I'm using AA3 aswell and when I've got a mixdown of a song I use the 'Normalize to -0.1dB' function and then I open the Izotope Ozone mastering VST plugin in AA3. Started using that a some weeks ago and I really like it.. the songs in my profile are done with that.

You could download the Izope trial from their site (fully operational for 10 days then gets into demo mode) to see if you like it.

I've been messing with the mastering section in AA3 aswell but didn't really like it. Before I was using Tracks24 for mastering but since a few weeks ago it's all Ozone for me now..

Indeed phk, when you master you do so to the entire song mixed down to one track. The main points are EQ (harmonic balance), adding air and bringing volume up to standard.

I have not seen AA3's version of the mastering rack, but in AA2 it is simply a strip to add your plugins to, I use it often.

I personally would not use normalize for mastering in the way stated. I would use it before the limiter maybe to get the track volume louder as it does no compression, but for the final volume level a limiter is the be all end all.
