I just had a quick question....anyone out there that owns a Marshall JCM 2000 dsl 100....would you happen to know the amps sweet spot for the volume control...im guessing its somewhere between 6 and 9....for both clean and gain channel....

I just ordered a THD Hot Plate and would like to get opinions on the best setting to keep the amp head at.

Thanks

It depends on the guitar/style/etc! Just play it a bit and see where it sounds good :)

[ins]anarchist's answer is actually a lot more informative than you'd imagine. It really does depend on the style etc. Also, Marshall's have a tendency to shift their tone (and I'm not talking 'Tone Shift' controls) as the volume is increased. There's a shift in the mids with the EL34 tube. The other thing is that your tone settings will play a huge part in your amp's 'sweet spot.' A scooped metal sound might sound great at a certain volume, but a bluesy, cleaner sound might not jump out until the amp is (....one?) louder.

I have a JCM 800 so id say its a little different. Ive got the hotplate setup and I run my Preamp at 7 and master at 8 sometimes 9. Make sure your preamp isnt over saturated as this will make things very muddy at high volumes and your poweramp section will be doing most of the work anyways. The DSL are totally different beasts though, but try those settings and see how you go. Also dont run it flat out all the time as youll soon find youll be burning through sets of tubes sooner. Hope that helps. Oh and also treble can be at around 7-8 at high volumes as like TallChap said the 'characteristics' of the amp shift. Youll probably find that your tone controls behave better at high volumes and are much smoother.

i have a 6505, but i would say you'd need to run it fairly hard to get the best sound, the jcm's got valves?
they work best when driven a bit.
i think if ya run the head and box on 16ohms it runs bit hotter so might not have to crank it so much but still a bit.
