Cubase uses a physical key that attaches to either your parallel port or USB port dependant upon version. The key contains firmware that will allow the program to boot. Check www.steinberg.net for upgrade offers if you have a previous version of Cubase. I know they are offering a an upgrade price from Cubase VST to Cubase SX. Did you note any reason that the previous version might have quit?

The protection device is a unit called a "dongle" that hangs off your parallel port. Rather than a CD-Key, or serial number, they have a physical device to help keep their software from being pirated, as serials and keys can often be cracked quite easily.

And yes, like Walt said, there are also USB and other port devices that do the same thing for the same reason, just protection and manytimes the firmware for upgrading that Walt also referred to.

These units come with the program when it is purchased.

I suggest taking it back to the store which you purchased it from, they can usually get ahold of the company and let them know, while also giving you a refund.

They are posted at the top of the thread's list for each forum. Just give a click, and they will bring you to the rule page for that forum.
