my set up: p4 1.8gig 400mhz fsb aprox 650meg ram, 2 40 gig seagate 7200 hard drives, sonar 2.0xl, fruity loops, windows xp pro, maudio omni studio sound card,TDK 52X cdrw, mackie 1400 pwr amp, ev shelf mon.,junky bose head phones, mxl/sure/ev mics, quadverb2, rack mount guitar tuner, power conditioner.

Now is the question...what is the correct way to set up all of this....do I put all programs on one hard drive and leave all audio wave files on the other hard drive?

Is windows 98se better than xp pro for my sound card?

Do I run the QuadVerb in the FX/Aux Channel of my sound card?

Where do I put the power line conditioner...should I plug everything in to this or just the outboard gear?

Thanks for your input...so much to think about?

this is for a solo song writing project.

Plug everything you can into your power conditioner, they are good for everything.

Yes, plug your effects box into your aux loop, you may need to pull it out from time to time for a given application, but as a whole that is the best place for it.

As for hard drives, I find it best to have the OS and applications on one drive and all your projects on another drive. Better performance and better safety for your projects should something go wacky on your system drive.

Windows 98 isn't better for anything than Windows XP...except maybe the PC museum :-)

Just to augment.

Another point to using a power conditioner is that this will provide a common ground for all equipment as you grow and run short of outlets.

Tascam offers a real nice guide to optomizing the computer on their website. They talk about system settings that are easy to set that will really help your system operate well for recording.
