Problem with MBox drivers

Hello folks,
I have an Mbox 1 and am using it with Logic on a PC. I've had the MBox for a few years but recently it has been playing up. When I go to install the drivers for it, as soon as I plug it in all the lights come on whereas before they wouldn't untill I had installed it with the ProTools disc. When I plug it in, Windows trys to install the drivers for it and when I scan my system it tells me that there are no drivers for the MBox. I think it must be some kind of clash between the drivers that Windows installs and the drivers from my ProTools disc. When I try to play a track in Logic, the song gets anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds in before closing Logic completely or giving me an error message saying "Logic has experienced a problem and needs to close". Ive reinstalled Windows, Logic and the MBox counless times but it has no effect. The problem started when I began mixing at a 96 sample rate so that migt be something to do with it. The same problem happens at a 48 sample rate but it dosent happen as often. My computer has a 4gig, dual core processor and 2gig of ram so I don't think its that.

Since posting the last message I've been looking round the web and found out (I think) that the MBox does not run at 96. Is that right? I can select 96 in Logic and it will play a little which makes me think that if it couldn't play back at 96 then it wouldn't at all. Anybody got any ideas?

Is your mbox updated with the most recent firmware? It appear v20 is the latest (which is 5 years old or so).

It's hard ware read Digi's docs to know if they are referring to PT or MBox but it appears it may be limited to 48k sample rate.

Yep, the original M-Box could only do 48k.

I'm not sure when they upped it to 96k though. And if you take a look at the firmware update it may contain a fix.

They fully upgraded to 96 with the second generation of the MBox 2. I've never known an original MBox to record at 96, but who knows with digi hardware. They may have included the stuff to do it and were waiting on the drivers to become stable enough to issue.

Anywho, what's wrong with 48 or 44.1? I'm a little naive on sample rates, but in the grand scheme of things, does it really makes a huge difference?

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna go home and try out your ideas. I got the same problem at 48 but that was usually when I had just tried to open a Logic song at 96. Hopefully if I convert my new project down to 48, the problem should go away after a while.

even though the scientists say that the human ear cannot detect a difference in quality affter 44.1, some tests have shown that you get a brighter and more clear top end at a higher sample rate. It's all going back down to 44.1 in the end anyway when it gets mastered to CD.

Cheers
