I'm about to get a new PC for home (just general use) and don't want to buy MS Office. I've been hearing good things about Open Office. Any first hand experience ???

Jan 15, 2008 04:36 pm Yes. We use it here at the college for about half of the computers, due to limitations of our Microshaft site license. It works well much of the time. There can be formatting glitches when opening a Word document with Writer, and the PowerPoint equivalent is somewhat less than user-friendly. Bear in mind there may be a new version out with these problems fixed.
Give it a try. It's free.

Jan 15, 2008 05:57 pm I was using it for a while due to my HP laptop having the "Trial" version of MS Office on there (either give me a usable version, or don't bother).
I found that OpenOffice had a bunch of very nice features, and no bloatware. Great product.

Jan 15, 2008 07:19 pm I use it on my linux and windows box. It does what I need it to. Only thing I dislike is it does take a little bit to load up, but ya know, that's minimal.
