Dec 28, 2007 01:08 pm is your line in a stereo jack? if so it has three contact (TRS for tips/ring/sleeve) the "sleeve" is the ground, the tip and ring are left and right...you just need to control the signal going to the left and right side...and record in stereo in the application on your PC.
Welcome to HRC.
Dec 29, 2007 07:24 am hi, ermm, as i say im new to this whole thing alltogether, all i know is that my laptop has 3 sockets, 1 with a headphone sign, one with a mic sign, and another wierd one i dont know what it is, so im guessing its a line in. also what software do i use to get the 2 different channels?

Dec 29, 2007 09:07 am That's probably the line in. If it has the little circles, with an arrow pointing to the center of it, then that's line in.
Almost positive that would be 2 channels. I don't think I've seen a line in with only 1 channel.
Any recording software will let you record in stereo. Krystal Audio Engine is free, and does pretty much everything you wish. Reaper is shareware and is a full featured program. I've just looked up MuLab, which used to be Luna. That one looks promising as well. Free for the lighter ( but capable) version.
Also, any of these softwares will let you record 2 mono tracks, like if you have 2 different things to record, or stereo, like keyboard with stereo field (l & r).
Try a couple out, and see what makes more sense, and is easy to figure out. There's a few lo-$$$ ones, but I figure you'd rather try out free ones, before you start shelling out $$$ for something you don't like =).
Once inside the software, you'll probably be looking for a SigmaTel audio device. That one is common on laptops. Tell the software to use that device for inputs and outputs, and you should be ready to start.
One more thing, depending on what gear your using to record with (mic, preamp, cables) you'll need some sort of converter, to convert from 1/4" mono cables down to a 1/8" stereo plug (to plug into your line in). These are quite common, and Radio Shack (US) will probably have them. Otherwise parts-express sells them, as does zzounds, i believe.

That may work, depending on what gear you're coming from.
