Hi

I have an old Korg D16 and I wish to burn some songs to a CD. Do I have to by a CD recorder or can I use my computer? I have tried Sound recorder and a couple of other programs but I keep getting the same problem. When I listen back to it the sound quality is all over the place, when it should be quiet its loud and vice versa. I have tried messing around with the compression and other settings but keep getting the same result. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Cheers

I don't know the Korg D16 but how are you getting your songs from the D16 to the computer? What are you connecting to what ?

For recording on the PC, search and install Audacity - it's free and has a lot of good tools.

However if you are running a cable from the D16 to your soundcard then you are at the mercy of the soundcard, cable and D16 output.

So line in is not a really solid way to record on a standard PC, I realize you have no choice though. Maybe you could record into Audacity and see what you can do to improve things.

THAT is exactly what compression will do....you wanna keep things dry (as in NO effects) when recording them into the computer from the keyboard....if you like how it sounds comming out of the keyboard, then simply record it with your line in on your computer....now if you wanna "mix" the audio a bit better, your best bet is recording every track individually.

Ok I will give Audacity a go. If I still have trouble what do you suggest? A new soundcard? If so whats the cheapest that will do the job?

Given that you are having to use Line In this is the best way to go. You should be able to record with audacity and use compression and some of their other tools such as EQ etc to make it sound good.

Who's, the D16 is a recorder not a keyboard.

I just looked up the D16. It seems you can attach a CD recorder directly to it and that it has a hard drive, this suggests that you should be able to attach it to the PC. It also has a SPD/IF output so if your card or one you can borrow has SPDIF in then you can get a great sounding recording.

Line in is still definitely the cheapest and easiest and should be good enough if you use Audacity to fix things up a bit. Make sure you are using a stereo cable for connectivity (stereo on the Line In end).
