Ok so i have been on a quest for about six months now and i think you can help...which would be really cool. for my band (we play metal/punk...protest the hero style) and some parts of our songs we would like it to sound like a crowd chanting. kinda like pantera's walk, if im thinking of the right thing,(wasnt really a dime fan) but anyways. without getting thirty guys into a room with a mic and having them all shout something at the same time is there any tricks of the trade that i can do to emulate this.
NOTE: i have recorded myself saying stuff, then used a chorus on it like 14 times and it sounds like a lot of poeple, it just sounds like there in a tube. so its too...gimmikey, any suggestions?

Sep 01, 2007 02:40 am What software are you using? In Cool Edit there's a delay effect called "Chorus" that I believe would allow you to accomplish what you're after. I'm sure other programs have the same thing, too.
Sep 01, 2007 02:41 am Record the chant, then copy it into a bunch of separate tracks. Zoom in, and jostle each one about, very slightly. That may give you the effect. It also may scare you out of ever trying that **** again.
Sep 01, 2007 04:55 am no no no!!! simply record yourself over and over again...copyin' and adding effects will NOT sound the same...just have 6 or so tracks of you singin' it over and over again...harmonize if you can. i've made a fake 'crowd' background by clingin' glasses and chatting about BS over and over again...layer them and it'll sound realistic.

Sep 01, 2007 09:58 am I second WYD, record it over and over again, stand at differnet distances from ur mic, say it in different ways just do wat would naturally happen in a crowd. Everyone is standing somewhere else, not everyoen sounds the same or does everything the same. You can get your band to stand around the mic and do it.
My band did the same thing in our song, and for our album its gonna sound even bigger, so yeah we've had success with this technique.
Also after doing as mnay takes as you feel is sufficient, put different amounts of reverb on most the takes to give even more depth, you can also put some chorus, but it never really helped me. Just adding tracks like WYD said will work perfectly fine, coz its exactly what would be happening in real life with an army of people singing into one mic.

Somehow, I find that very believable, WYD. :)
