Recording with small amps?

IS there any inconvenience in miking small amps? I have never recorded from big fat amps and this question came to my mind.
anyone here ever recorded with small amps?

Jan 26, 2003 03:15 pm I record with small amps a lot of the time (I assume you're talking about guitar amps, right?). It all depends on sound quality, really. Usually bigger amps have a better sound, and much richer, deeper, bass. The volume isn't really an issue when recording though. If you have a good sounding small amp, than that can be better than a bad sounding big amp.

Jan 26, 2003 05:19 pm the inconvienance comes from the fact that some mic stands don't reach that low...and they are closer to a surface (aka the floor)... puting them on a table helps :) ...there are "amp stands" available...
Jan 27, 2003 01:46 am I remember reading somewhere that Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine did something like that while recording "Evil Empire". He miked a little practice amp, i think it was on the song "Tire Me", to get the sound he was looking for.

Jan 27, 2003 04:56 am I use my Peavey Rage 158 practice amp a lot when recording my guitar sound since I love it's sound so much. heh I've even mic'd it and used it live. The only real inconveniance is having it so close to the floor, but if you put it up on a table or stand or just get it above the surface somehow then it works.

Jan 27, 2003 03:34 pm Yup, you can get away with alot if you spend the time to do it right. If any of you have ever seen the little micro amp's that look like a little Marschal or Fender. I used one of them once with great result's. Put it on the edge of a staeir landing and pointed it out into the hall. Then hung 3 mic's out pointing at it. One about a foot out, the next about two feet, and the third about five feet. Once it was processed and mixed together, it had the koolest razor edged sound I had ever heard. But be warned, I worked on getting it all tweaked in SoundForge and WaveLab for about 2 week's to get what I wanted.
