What are some good, low budget mics for recording acoustic guitar and vocals?

I dont want to spend more than $150 if i dont have to....

How are the MXL 990 and MXL 991? any good? guy at guitar center said they sucked and to get the AKG Perception 100 or 200 mic instead and it would do vocals and acoustic better than the MXL 990 and MXL 991 can.

i found the AKG 100 for $100
and a mxl 990/991 w/ m-audio buddy pre amp for $100.

I don't really like the MXL990 for acoustic, at least not alone. It sounds a little thin and brittle. Its OK for vocals, but not stellar by any means. The 990 is on sale at MusiciansFriend for $50, which is a steal. It definitely beats anything else you can get for $50, but that's not saying much considering the competition :)

I do like the MXL991 for acoustic though. I have a pair of them and I use one on the neck, one on the bridge and I like the results. They're a little harsh in the upper mids (seems to be an MXL thing altogether). They're on sale at MusiciansFriend for $125 a pair, which is also a steal. They're great drum overheads if nothing else.

I've never heard the Perception with my own ears so I can't say how they sound, but they get good reviews from a lot of people. I'm pretty sure they're going to sound better than either of those MXLs, but thats not to say that the MXLs suck.

The MXL 990 991 combo is okey for low end mics on acustic guitars, if you place them right and use a bit of eq to give it a more well rounded sound, but yeah they are a little bright. I've been doing my acustic stuff with two AKG c100s mics, which run for about 199 each. They're definatly a step up from the MXLs, but they're still no neumann. BUt even with the MXLs a good sound can be gained from micing the guitar correctly, and applying eq and maybe some reverb.

Good call on not trusting GC. When I worked there we were instructed what to push per 'take' or profit margin. I've seen the store manager in Canton MI ream a sales person for not following that dictate. One example sticks into my mind. We had a Senheiser and Shure of comperable price, but the Senheiser had a much greater profit margin for GC. It happened to be of lesser quality than the Shure. For a week our customers had to nearly beg to buy a Shure. Simply discusting.
