Ha, no, I haven't started playing but my daughter has just started. Only thing is that I don't know how to help her out other than to show her how the bow will work on my electric guitar.

Does anyone know of any good links or anything at all that will help her get started?

EEK!!!

ok i rented a cello for awhile (cuz i couldn't afford a stand up bass)
and to be completely frank, i have NO IDEA how they expect kids to learn pitch on ANY non fretted stringed instrument. it seems "having THE ear" is a prerequisite to pull off such a feat.

i don't mean to discourage, but from my experience, percussion (inculding keys) is much more intuitive for a youngster. i was lucky and started on drums, then learned bass, then guitar...so really had a feel for rhythm before i was concerned about notes, and then chords.

to me it seems a VERY logical progression, but i must admit, i'm HEAVILY biased.

i just can't imagine a kid KNOWING where the hell a particular note is on an un-fretted stringed instrument....i STILL use my fret lines on my fretless bass (although i think i could be comfortable without, but this is after YEARS of experiance).

props to your daughter for tackling such a hard instrument.....all the best wishes for her.

but IF she looses interest, get her behind an instrument she can hit with a stick, and she'll love it!

it's just me, but i think kids should learn timing before pitch.

Thanks guys. Noise, I will pass on those links.

WYD, so far she has been through drums, piano, singing and flute. Now the flavor of the day is Violin. She has a natural music ability and ear for music. She also goes at things 110%. So far she has dedicated a minimum of 1 hour a day to practice. Not sure how long she will stick with it but this is why I got into a buy back arrangement.

BTW - this is my daughter Cassandra, not Chelsea. Just thought I would clear that up 'cause Chelsea is quite involved with what our band is doing and I didn't want you all to think we were somehow going to introduce a violin into the mix.

hey, i'm sure she'll sort it out later....let her find her own, and versatility on mutiple instruments/musical talents has made me more money than anything.....sure you got your ppl that are awesome at only one instrument, but to be a 'jack of all trades', well i can say in the recording business, that's a MAJOR plus.
