Alesis DM5 hookup to computer

Hello All.

Just got an Alesis DM5 Drum Module (with trigger "drum set"). I was wondering how one would go about hooking it up through a midi keyboard so that I can use it as a controller for a piece of computer software. My keyboard is a Edirol Pcr-30 with midi in/out. the Dm5 has midi in/out/thru.

Is it possible to hook it up like that or do i need an actual midi interface?

thanks.

Hey, welcome to HRC.

I can't honestly say I have ever tried anything like that with the newer USB keyboards. My son uses an M-Audio unit similar to that but we have never tried using the midi in to see if it will send through to the USB interface portion.

I would suggest trying to hook it up that way. Midi out from the DM5 to the midi in on the PCR and then set up a track to see if it sends the note info to the track. I will make an assumption that the USB midi interface of the Edirol unit would act as its own midi through so it should work in theory.

Otherwise, yes a simple 1 x 1 midi interface would work for you as well.

Let us know if it does indeed work.

And as a side note, it will not do any damage hooking the midi out of the DM5 to the midi input of the Edirol unit. just in case you were worried about that.

Well,
Unless I am missing something. (not entirely out of the picture...),
I do not believe it will work (on the eidrol pcr-30 at least). From what i can gather on their website there is no midi thru on the Keyboard and unless i am doing soethiong wrong it does not seem to be passing the midi over the usb.
