Sorry to be a philistine but am new to garageband and hoping some one can put me right.
What am I doing wrong?
I've got a m-audio fast pro box plugged into a macbook pro lap top.
With my guitar plugged into the fast pro I can record the guitar track and hear it dry on headphones out of the fast pro.
How do I hear the guitar with effects from the garageband effects.
I only seem to hear it once I've stopped recording and not whilst I'm recording.
In the sound preferences, the output is set to internel speakers but thereis a fast pro option but when I choose it nothing happens. Or do I have to fit monitors to the m-audio. I was hoping to listen on headphones whilst I record the guitar effect and not dry?
Tell me what Im doing wrong
Thanx

May 21, 2007 06:08 pm I don't have these units but it sounds similar to my setup.
I think you do have to choose the Fast Pro option and then you have to use the Fast Pro to listen.
The Fast Pro becomes your soundcard when you set it but without setting it you'll get latency and the dry problem you have.
May 21, 2007 09:08 pm I wonder if in the Track properties you have turned the monitor option on...
Highlight the track you want to hear, go to the Track menu and select "Show Track Info" (or Apple-I shortcut or just double-click on the track) Turn the "Monitor" to "on".
Let me know if this was the problem, and we'll work from there...
Or maybe I've totally misunderstood your question...
May 22, 2007 05:17 pm Thanx guys,
Ive tried out suggestions but no luck.
However it may be me being stupid. The headphones are into the maudio so they will always hear the mix dry. I just thought you could hear the effects from the laptop using the internal speakers or should I be plugging headphones direct into lap top.
At the moment I can still only hear the effects only after its been recorded - a bit like driving blind
If I choose fast track pro as output in sound preferences I can't hear any sound.
I've also tried in the track info both monitor on or off when choosing track.
Any other ideas?
cheers

May 22, 2007 05:31 pm Did the drivers for the M-Audio device include the M-Audio Control Panel? If so,you can go to the Routing tab and play with the different settings for HW Out 1/2 (or whichever output you have your headphones plugged into on the M-Audio).
If its set to HW In 1/2, then you're just going to hear the dry version of what's being sent into your input 1 and 2. That sounds like what it's set to now.
If its set to Monitor Mix, then you'll hear everything being sent into the M-Audio card.
If you choose Wave Out, then your M-Audio will play all of the Windows sounds.
May 22, 2007 05:53 pm I may be being dumb here but having your headphones in the m-audio should not result in you hearing the dry mix. The box should be handling the in/out and acting like a soundcard.

May 22, 2007 06:08 pm Sorry, not a dry mix, but the dry signal being sent into input 1 or 2.
In the original post he was referring to just the guitar track, but I see in the more recent post he's referring to the mix.
May 23, 2007 03:39 pm tadpui,
I've checked the mac but I don't seem to have the m-audio panel anywhere. The pdf manual talks about one but I can't see it. I've reloaded the drivers twice but still no luck in finding it. Do you think I've got a dodgy disc and should phone their help centre?
I'm going round in a loop here!!!!!

May 23, 2007 05:20 pm Interesting. I'm not sure if that particular M-Audio device needs the control panel or not, especially when it comes to a Mac.
I use an M-Audio Delta 44 on a PC, and the control panel is an essential part of configuring the card. I'm not sure how well my experience on an older card with a different operating system will translate to your situation.
First off, I'd go to M-Audio's website and make sure that you have the latest version of their drivers. The drivers that came on my CD didn't work at first, and it wasn't until I updated from their website that my card would work.
Hopefully its that simple!
May 23, 2007 06:37 pm Thanks, Ill try that and let you know. Just to say the `M-audio is brand new with the drivers but its worth a try. `keep you posted
May 25, 2007 01:16 pm OK Guys, I have sorted out the problem having rung the maudio helpline.
It seems although I bought a brand new maudio fastpro box one week ago, the drivers supplied were only good for mac 0SX 10.4.8.
Even though I bought my macbook pro lap top over a year ago it is 10.4.9.
That difference was all it took to not load the fast pro panel of the software which should be on the desktop although the rest of it seemed to work.
Anyway alls well
Thanks to everyone for trying to help me
Cheers from the UK
