Styx Paradise Theatre

Ya know, I am here in my cube listening to Paradise Theatre...when I was young and it was just released all my friends hated it, said it sucked and all that...then, and still today, I never understood why everybody I knew hated it...it's still to this day one of my favorite recordings...Half Penny Two Penny is a great song, Too Much Time on My Hands, and many others...

I dunno, man, anyone else have opinions on that recording?

It's always confused me why people hated it...or at least the people I knew.

Styx has always gotten a bad rap as far as I'm concerned. The Grand Illusion is another great album. Pieces of Eight is another of my favs. I saw Styx about 5 years ago and it was a great show. Lawrence Gowan has replaced Dennis Deyoung and did a pretty decent job. Sass Jordan opened for them and she is awesome! All in all, it was a great show.

Actually Tommy Shaw was at NAMM 2 years ago and did a great acoustic set of Styx stuff. Very cool.

Yeah, on the whole Styx did get a bad rap from certain groups/genre fans, I agree, Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight were great...The only thing they did that I really hated was Kilroy Was Here...I thought that sucked.

Ya, the whole Killroy thing was a little too fluffy for me. I tend to go for their harder stuff like Queen of Spades, Miss America, Blue Collar Man and the likes. I haven't checked out their latest at all (Brave New World). They played a couple of tunes from it when I saw them but I didn't really care for it at the time.

I'm split right down the middle on Styx. I love the Tommy Shaw stuff, I hate the dennis DeYoung stuff.

I don't like the ballads, "Lady", "Come Sail Away" and that crap but I am right with BeerHunter on the tunes he mentioned, I love their rockin' stuff...not sure who wrote what, but when they rock, they rock...

For a real treat check out the Shaw/Blades colab thing going on now. I think they are touring and will hit MN this summer.

And ya, I was still playing in those days and indeed Styx stuff was a must play in most bars. I dont' know why anyone would hate their stuff.

Funny you should mention Paradise Theater dB, that was the very first piece of vinyl that Tuna picked out of the collection to have me burn to CD. I think he was like 11 at the time. He still to this day has Styx stuff in his mp3 collection.

And ya, the stuff BH mentioned was indeed bar tunes in my day. If your band could cut it. Funny enough is Rockfist now plays that stuff as well, and their singer pulls it off nicely.

I forgot it...didn't know there was one...I have an Ozzy picture disc hangin on the wall in my studio...or what was once my studio...thats about the coolest thing I have in that area of memorabilia...other than lots of grateful dead stuff.

I'm with you on the Paradise Theatre album dB. When I was a kid my father gave me 10 or 15 records out of his collection to get me started and that was one of them. I listened to it for hours. Great stuff.

TC, I have it. Locked up in special storage unit for vinyl lovers like me. That among about 200 other picture disc's and several thousand other pieces of collectible vinyl. I have all the Boston Pic discs, Heart, Ramones, Joan Jet, Rancid, Fleetwood Mac and a bunch of others I haven't looked at for a good long time. I even got me some ABBA pic discs. Maybe I should just stop being so over protective of my precious vinyl and break em out.

Naaa, ain't gonna do that. Speaking of Heart, boy were those girls good looking back then. Uf Dah!
