I have a spare Sony 80w powered subwoofer sitting about. I'd like to add this to my DX4 monitors.

a.) How would you suggest I go about this? I mean the routing. In to the sub, out to the DX4's?

b.) Do you think there would be any real benefit to doing this?

c.) What?

Thank you, in advance, for any suggestions.

Hey TC,

I have a Behringer EQ that has a sub out on it. This is what I use to feed my sub in the live room but I don't use a sub in the control room.

A) How many outs do you have on your soundcard? Could you not just feed it that way.

B) There would be a benefit to using a sub especially if you are mixing pop or techno.

C) Whhhaaaatttt?

I think that that EQ idea might work. That goes between the mixer and the monitors, right. I'm using an EMu0404 card, so the audio outs are just a pair. Then I have the digitals (optical and RCA styles). I'm fixing to hook up a home audio 5.1 system to my soundcard (via optical), but want to have the ability to have the sub with the monitors for
mixing.

The DX4's have balanced ins (1/4") on the powered unit, and then a simple speaker wire over to the unpowered speaker. www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/DX4-focus.html

Well done on (c.).

Does your subwoofer have a passive crossover? Many do...so you could plug the left and right leads into the sub, and then take the high outputs and send them to the satellites.

Failing that, you have a few options, one being a crossover, which would typically require the sub to get it's own amp (unless it's self powered, which many are), or the EQ crossover combo as mentioned above.

I see you did say it's self-powered...I'd go the crossover route... a simple subwoofer crossover shouldn't be too expensive or hard to find...
