Panning question

New to all this and I have a question about Panning tracks Left/Right. I currently have a song I have recorded, and all tracks have been recorded in Mono. Can you still Pan a track if it is in Mono format or do you have to make it Stereo first?? I am using Audition 2.0. As it stands when I adjust the Pan per any track, for the most part nothing happens except for a few tracks just lose volume, but no distinct Left/Right. Also, once I have Panned settings the way I want them (Non-Destructively) how do I actually apply it to the tracks so that when I eventually mix eveything down to 2 tracks, the Panned tracks are in the correct places??

Thanks

Panning works the same for stereo or mono tracks. Are you sure you have both audio channels out of your computer hooked up? It sounds like you may only be hearing one. That would cause the effect you describe.

As far as saving settings - pan or otherwise - all such settings are kept in the Session file when you save it, and the program remembers them when you reopen it.

yeah, sounds like your monitoring solution is only one channel. Panning in your software should have a noticable effect on mono track placement. It doesn't have to be stereo for mono to move back and forth between left and right. Mono tracks do this all the time.

After you've got your tracks mixed the way you want, you would then mix everything down to a stereo wave file. This is called mixdown in some software, or render in others. Once you do the mixdown, all the effects, pan, volumes, etc., will all be in the new stereo track.

This way you never have to do anything permanent to the individual tracks, just apply the effects (pan, volume automations, etc) and the mixed down file will have the result.

So let me make sure I am understanding you correctly... I can do all of my Effects and everything in Non-Destructive (Multi-track view using Audition 2.0) and ultimately when I Mix-Down all of the effects and pans and volumes will be there in the Mixed down Stereo Track?? I shouldn't have to go into Individual Track Editing and apply the effects destructively, correct??

That is correct.

you should be hearing the panning effects as you are working....from what i can understand, you don't have your speakers hooked up properly...something is definately mucked up there.

also 'stereo' dosn't necesseraly mean 'comming out of both speakers' it's two totaly different signals that are isolated from eachother...mono just means one, you can have a mono signal paned anywhere in the stereo field and it's still a mono track, it's kinda like closing one eye, you see in stereo, but when you close one eye, you can still see everything, but your sense of depth is altered (try closing one eye and touching two fingers together)

we hear in stereo (two ears) and it's the subtle timing differences between when a source reaches one ear before the other that tells us where the source is.

check your outputs that your using on your computer...your monitors are not giving you 'stereo' anything if you can't pan things and hear it.

Hmmmm.... I still can't get this working right. This is my setup:
Firepod Left/Right going out the Cue Mix LineOut to PreSonus HP4 Input L/R
then HP4 Output L/R to each Rokit5 Speaker and I have 2 sets of Headphones coming out the front of the HP4.
All tracks are set to Output Master and the Master Channel is set to Stereo (LineOut 12 Left)

Any ideas??

(LineOut 12 Left)

That would be my first guess as 12 left means it is only using the left channel. In most other interface driver call outs it will read line out 12 stereo.

I would double check your settings first off.

My next question is if you have one cable going out to each speaker or are you trying to use a TRS stereo jack to get this done?

The monitors need a separate line out for each channel, left and right.

Thanks Noize... I was using a TRS cable to go from the Firepod to HP4. I am now using 2 regular cables
1 for each channel like you said, and all is well.
Thanks
