Cheapest way to get decent quality recordings

Alright, I have no experience whatsoever in this field. I'm a drummer and I also have a guitarist. We want to record some of our songs with decent quality, but have no idea how to do it. Originally we just tried recording both of us from a single microphone and it sounded pretty bad. The drums sound fine from a microphone as long as its close, but the guitar needs to be recorded through direct input. What I tried was going to line in on my computer (and I do have a good sound card) but there was just too much static and unwanted noise. Whats the best way to have both of these simultaneously recorded (guitar - direct input and drums from a mic). It would be ideal if I could record 4 simultaneously, that way when we get a bassist and a singer we can all record at once without having to play seperately. I am on a pretty tight budget too. Let me know.

This is not the trait of a 'good soundcard' . If you can tell us which model it is, we'll be able to lend help more precisely .

Reguardless, if you want to record four separate sources, you will probably want to replace it with something that will allow more inputs than two . Also, if you want to record any of those sources in sterio, you'll need more than four inputs . Basically, you'll need a multi-input(4+) soundcard, OR a mixer to mix everything into a sterio-field before it hits tape, OR both depending on which soundcard you have or buy .

There are a few free/sharewares out there to be had, and tons of free plugins, so software on the cheap wont be an issue .

One thing to do is check out the ad's for old 4 and 8 track recording equipment, some of the old stuff is out of style but good and cheap.
