Need Audio Card Recommendations

I need to set up an HP laptop with an audio interface for live performance. I really need ultra low latency.

Now I've read all kinds of claims from this manufacturer and that about low latency, but I have never been able to achive anything on any system below at least 20 milliseconds and usually a lot closer to 40 or above.

For the laptop, I will not ever be recording, it's for playback and live midi play only, but It does need to have midi I/O.

I don't need a million features, just these: I need something cheap, dependable, and ultra low latency, with midi I/O.

Probably needs to be USB, I don't think the laptop has a firewire interface. It may have a PCMCIA interface that I could buy a firewire sub-interface for, but I'm guessing that much conversion will probably increase latency.

So there it is, any suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks!
Phil

I had an M-Audio audiophile usb lying around. I was able to get it down to about 5ms. That's good enough for what I need. It's just for live gigs. The only real problem is these have a lot of driver flakiness. They want to reinstall every time you plug the thing in. Still, it works so, you know. Does the job.

Hmm, I have a US-122 that did that. After 3 times of re-installing the drivers, windows decided it was satisfied, and I haven't had to since. strange.

I cycle the laptop now, everytime I want to use the 122. I'm to paranoid about static, and driver / connectivity issues.

I definitely need to get a new soundcard. I was looking at a M-Audio Delta 1010 LT PCI soundcard but I'm not sure if thats what I should go with.

And could I just get an usb or firewire interface instead or do I need both?

If the laptop has firewire, and you got the cash, you definitely could not go wrong there. Capturing live would be nice with 1kick 1snare 2OH 2Guitar 1Bass 1Vox (normal layout) and some spare channels for backup vox or other instruments.

I'm in the process of this trying to set up a mobile rig also.

PCI is one way to get the bits and bytes into your PC and software. USB is another way, Firewire is another way. They all work, but you don't need more than one.

The 1010LT is a great step up from onboard sound. It's stable and very well regarded.
