Why won't my laptop record in stereo?

Okay, I'm very much a home recording n00b. But here's the deal:

Hello.

I'm coming out of a Eurotrack MX2004a, with the LR phono TAPE OUT output. I have that running into my laptop with LR phono to stereo 1/8th cable. However, if I do any panning on the soundboard, it doesn't work on my laptop. In fact, if I pan fully to the left, it sounds a little distorted, and if I pan fully to the right, I get no sound at all.

Now I've tried a couple different solutions. First, if I go straight into the house speakers instead of the laptop and try to pan, it works great. Soundboards fine. So I tried using the Master Sends that normally go to the house speakers and tried sending them to my laptop. Same result... no sound on full right pan.

Obviously, this is unacceptable to have a mono signal, especially when I'm recording drums.

Any ideas what it could be? Is it possible that my soundcard won't accept a stereo signal coming in? I can send out stereo, no problem. Can pan the laptop mix all the way to the right and hear it perfectly in my right ear. I just can't seem to get a stereo signal coming in to remain stereo. Please advise.

are you setting your recording app to record a stereo track? inserting a mono channel in your app to record on isn't gonna record a stereo signal in stereo.....make sure it says L+R or something similar on the input section

Also, if your using the built in sound card on the laptop, I wonder if you might be using the mic in istead of the line in.

What software are you using to record with. Maybe we can help walk you through to see if the software is set up correctly to record in stereo.

Whosyourdaddy:

Yes the app is set up to record in stero. However, even if I wasn't using the app, it still doesn't come through in stereo. I can hear just from talking in the mic, and either way, if I pan hard right, it goes silent.

Noize:

Yes, I am using the mic in. There is no line in on my computer... that's sort of my fear- that a "mic in" means mono only. If it does, than could you please suggest a low budget external soundcard?

Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate the help.

How much is low budget. There are some cheap units and then there are low priced units that are a good deal more dependable.

And yes, the mic in would be mono only.

Rats.

Well, I'm not looking for anything super fancy. I just want the ability to record in stereo, clearly. Is that a lot to ask for? I'm on a church budget, so any expenditure is tight. I saw a bunch online in the 30 dollar range. Absolute crap? I definitely can't go much over $75.

Recommendations? Thanks!

Hello,

How about the Behringer USB interface.

Cheap and cheerful but it will do what you want.

Happy Hunting,

I think both M-audio and Tascam have small stereo units for around that price range. And the one Flashy is listing is good as well.
