What is the proper way to do this?

My set up seems to be totally odd compared to most peoples, but i dont understand how it cant be done any other way - i'll explain what my set up is and what i think is wrong, and hopefully someone can tell me where im going wrong.

My set up works as a strait line currently:
Microphones--->behringer ub2442fx-pro---(direct outs from 8 tracks with direct outs)--->delta 1010lt inputs--->cubase sx--->amp--->speakers

Now i have done it this way, because this way i can record up to 8 tracks and keep them seperate in cubase, however whenever i have seen other computer set ups, they generally go into the mixer, out of the ctrl room outs, into the computer, then back out again into the mixer, then the monitoring system attached to the mixer as well - what i dont understand is how people with this set up can record more than 2 mics at the same time and keep them seperate in their recoring software, surly if youve only got 2 leads going to the computer from the mixer (L and R) you could only seperate 2 tracks, by panning one left and one right - so what do you do if you are micing a drum kit that uses at 3 minimum? someone once told me something about an audio interface, which i have no idea about.

can someone please shed some light on this situation, let me know how the proposed set up can work with simaltanoues mic recording and if i need any other pieces of kit to do it this way.

much appreciated

p.s. sorry for posting 2 topics in the space of half hour

it really depends on the mixing board....if you get one with tons of aux busses (8+)....you can track AND mix with the board....you're board prolly has a "tape in" if so, you could use that to control your monitor (if you don't already have a dedicated volume knob)

you're setup is just fine for what you're using...remember, an engineer is a problem solver, and you gotta work with what you got....so each setup is unique....i sure would do it your way.

cheers

The control room outputs are what need to be hooked up to the amp/moniter set up. You are right in using the direct outs from the 8 channels you want at once into the PC. But you will only need to feed 2 channels out of the 1010LT into the amp as you really only want to listen to the stereo mix through your moniters.
