hello, i record electric guitar with sm57mic, art tps II preamp and the RNC 1773. wondering what i should put for threshold, ratio, attack, release, gain. also any specific settings that work better for rhythm or lead

Sep 01, 2006 01:41 am I would use a slow attack and slow release for guitar. Try 50 - 70 ms attack and 300-500 ms release. Pull the threshold back until you start to hear it.
A good way to set compression is to make some one play, pull down the threshold to its minimum and crank the make up gain until you can hear it.
Play with the attack and release until you find something you like and then bring the threshold back up till you can just hear the compression. Should sit around 3 dB gain reduction?
Some people think acoustic guitars sound better without compression, but its a matter of taste.

Sep 01, 2006 02:25 pm I don't really use much if any compression on electric guitar. On clean electric guitar I do because the dynamic range is pretty wide, but distorted guitars are already very compressed by definition.
Specific compressor settings (or settings of just about any kind) are so particular to each situation that they don't really do anybody any good.
The Colonel did put some pretty good general suggestions though. that's about as specific as anybody can get without standing over your shoulder in your studio.
I'd suggest doing some research on the different paramaters on a compressor so that you will understand what each knob controls. Then you'll have a good perspective when it comes time to apply settings in a new situation.
