Where To Start

I have been looking at doing home recording for a while and have finally decided to get started.

The only real recording equipment I have is an ESI Juli@ sound card, I have all the musical equipment(amps, instruments, mics etc)

For a mixer I am looking at the XENYX 2442FX from Behringer, Any thoughts on this. I already have all the software for the Juli@ plus Adobe Audition (is this good software for home recording?)

One thing I am wondering is, if I buy this mixer is there any way that I can put VU meters for each channel?

Also and good guides for what equipment to use etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

there was a neat discussion at homerecording.com about proper recording levels which boiled down to "if you set a proper gain structure at the mixer you'll have correct levels going to the computer"... and correct levels are not close to 0dB... but more along the lines of -18dB... this is primarially when recording at 24bit because it has about 140dB of dynamic range... so basically set the meters and gain to zero and if your signal comes in at around -18 db you're good to go... otherwise adding gain at the mixer also adds noise and distortion.

You should be able to monitor the input levels on the computer.

Audition should have a mixer view as do pretty much all DAW software these days. You will be able to moniter your track levels there without any problems.
