Overdrive/Distortion Pedal

I want to get a pedal that will function well as both, but i can't seem to find one. I'm looking into the Maxon ts9, fulltone distortion and fulldrive 2, mxr distortion, big muff, etc. My bandmate has the rat and that one is sweet but i kind of want a different sound. Any suggestions?

Also, i'm trying to choose between the boss flanger and the mxr one. Suggestions on that?

Thanks!

Take a look at the new Digitech line up of pedals, they have Mixer outs that are nice for going straight to your mixer as well as amp outs, plus great sounds as well.

I've never relaly found a pedal that can do both, the clipping for a good distortion and an overdrive is totally different, and any pedal that tries to accomplish both will usually fall short in one or the other. I use a Rat with an MXR distortion plus infront of it, thast alot of distortion, but alot of people use the Tubescreamer infront for a softer overdrive boost. I really dotn recommend tryin to nail it one pedal, but the Rat one has a really good range, the Rat2 does better in the od section and breaks up well into distortion. The Boss turbo overdrives are also nice. They have the bigger units ive never tried, like the stuff from hughes and kettner and the mesa boogie, but ur best bet is to get two pedals that do it seperately.

I HATE the boss flanger, i think it just does one sound and does it really half heartedly, MXR anyday. I personally dont like a lot of boss pedals, i dont think they realy dedicate the pedals to sound, but mostly to sturdy constructoin and good price, which is great for startin out.

I just checked your profile, noticed that you have a fender deville, u dont like the o/d on that? If you want more bite on it, you can maybe get something like a DOD preamp booster, itll just work off the o/d on ur amp, i relaly like teh fender overdrive. Try to remember one thing wiht distortion, less is usually more in the long run. Guitarists usually get this mental image of their sound that to others just sounds like alot of noise, so cleaning up ur sound actually fattens it up.

Test out the Sansamp Tri-AC pedal. It's a b*tch to 'program' (very sensitive soul), but once you get there it's wonderful. It's not going to give you the "wasp in a jar" sound you'd get from a RAT pedal, or a Big Muff, but to my ears there's some nice distorted sounds (The emulation of a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier is bone shattering).

As far as overdrive, I think that the TS808 takes the cake. Even the reissue gets a lot of good press. I've heard that little grey Tubescreamer cheapo reissue from Ibanez and I can say first hand that it sucks. But that Maxon TS9 should be a great OD pedal.

Check out some of Electro-Harmonix pedals like the English Muffin and the Two Tube. They use preamp tubes at higher plate voltages than the starved-plate designs on most "tube" pedals.

As far as flangers go, I have the Boss BF-2 and its OK. Its very versatile, but as far as any settings that you'd use regularly it can't quite shake that metallic resonant tone. I can't find a good "whoosh" setting that doesn't have that ringing metallic sound to it. Definitely play around with one before you buy it.

I'm partial to the Big Muff Pi www.ehx.com/ehx2/Default....F04_Big_Muff_Pi for its character. From warm sustain to the full on torn speaker distortion.

Otherwise if you want something with an over all smoothness try the Boss BD-2 www.bosscorp.co.jp/PRODUCTS/EN/BD-2/ it is pretty good. But I still prefer the EHX Big Muff Pi.

And agree with the MXR flanger being better. Much better control.

I can personally reccommend the Fulltone Fulldrive 2.

I love it in front of my Randall RM50 and in front of my Vetta II Combo.

Hey Rob, good to see you. I have to agree, I didnt even think of the Fulltone. It is another smooth one as well and has a nice wide range of tonal quality.

Oh, I'll have to agree with Tadpui on the Maxxon TS9. Very cool. The original Tubescreamer was magic, but you probably won't be able to find one (their owners will be in a cave with a fire and pointed stick guarding their "baby"). Tschk.

Before you jump into testing hundreds of digital preamps/effect boxes/pedals, I would recommend trying SansAmp Classic, the box that started it all.

It's not the cheapest one for sure, but it's all analog, extremely flexible and it's built like a tank (cast metal housing w/ heavy duty switches)

I've recently done one of my tracks with it, and you can hear it in action here:

Isn't the Tri-AC the updated version of the "Classic"?
I personally believe that SansAmp make wonderful stuff. Great sounding, built like tanks, and reliable.
