Monitor question regarding subs?

Ok, so I got some used M-Audio BX5A's for cheap from a guy in town.

They actually sound ok but of course are lacking in bass being they have a 5" driver.

When I can afford to pick up a sub, how do I hook this thing up? The BX5A do not have a seperate sub out so I basically will have to use more outputs from my layla setup yes?

Do subs have a L and R input, or am I going to need to combine a stereo pair down to one input.

I am sure that there is no 100% answer, but perhaps a norm?

Ok, after much reading and looking at different products I answered my own question. If anyone else didn't know...

The subs actually have two inputs and two outputs. Sooo.. run outputs to sub which then sends the signal to the satellites.

p.s. Took me a little while to realize this, but I think I may have put this in the wrong section.

Thats good to know CptTripps for some reason I thought that subs usually only had 1 RCA input...but thats probably because I've only seen cheap home theater subs and havent looked into any for monitoring. I mean it would make sense that there was only a L/R sum because subs arent stereo.

You are correct Tripps. I just added a sub to my KRK setup about a month or so ago. I come out of my Delta44 left and right into the sub and then left and right out to the monitors. After a bit of playing to get the levels right it works great for me.

Once you get past the 5" moniters, like my KRK K-Roks with 8" drivers you really shouldnt have a need for a sub. but indeed with the smaller drivers it is almost a must have. Just dont turn the sub up to far or you will not get a true picture and the mixes will lack in bass.

Awwww, you got the monitors I wanted/couldn't afford.

And yeah, I assume playing some commercial music of the same style would be a good way to dial in the sub? Anyone?

Tripps I use the KRK RP-5's with the RP-10S sub. To dial it in I had to just listen to music I knew and set the level that way. Thats not the ideal way to do it but it worked for me.

What would be the ideal way if you don't mind me asking?

I have the M-audio BX5A's and musicians friend has their SBX 120W powered sub for $200 right now (list is 499). I will be picking that up I think so I would like to setup it up proper, if there is such a thing.

Choosing a Cd that you are the most familier with. Then you can set your moniter set up to replicate it as close as possible. Just remember it is very easy to set the sub to sound great and big bass. But without knowing exactly what it is your listening to it wont help your mixes much. So it is really important to set it up listening to something you are the most familier with.

Roger that, I think I will go with some Pink Floyd The Wall, beings I have it memorized and have listened to it on 1000 different stereos for years upon years. Plus it has great recording quality, nice pumpin bass and a pretty mean kick when they wanted.

Thanks guys, man I love this site.

Lol I used Dark side of the moon, Steve Vai's Passion and warefare, Tool and some Counting Crows. That covered some of my often listened to CD's

Dont laugh! For referance I use James Brown, and couple others. The James Brown is because the content covers a huge tonal spectrum. That is what I'm handing the custom audio place Saturday to tune the new head on my system in the Vibe. That and a world music CD will get it up just right. Then the Tool, Rammstein and all the others will be simple EQ adjustments. And love it, this new head unit has a 10 band parametric EQ. I'm gonna be in that car all friggin night tommorrow.

That brings up another intersting point too Noize. The only places that I have the time to listen to music is in my car or at my computer(which is where the monitors are). I was shopping for a used Mustang back in october. There were three on the lot that I was at and one of them had a few more scratches than the others but it had the Mach 460 sound system with the 6 disc changer and factory subs. Guess which one I bought. :)

Sweet, what year is it? That is a kicken system. THe Vibe is running a pair of MTX amps, 500 watt 4 channel into Kicker componants which are being replaced with Focal componants and 500 watt mono into a kicker Solo Baric sub. The head unit he is installing is an Eclipse unit which will do CD, CD changer, mp3, wma and satalite radio. He is installing an aux input for other mp3 players or my mididisk, or what ever I want to hook into it. He figured I could even find a way to hook my POD xt into it if I wanted to as the Vibe has a 110 volt set up in it. They are also installing a new high output gel cell as the cap can barely keep up and I cant run the system for more then a few minutes without the car on. With the gell cell he garauntees it will run for at least an 1 and 1/2 hours before I will need to run the car.

Diemusic, ah ha , "Steve Vai's Passion and warefare," love that disk and am a huge fan of his. People just don't shred that crazy anymore. That CD solv over a million copies with only $10,000 into promo !. Another great reference CD, especially cause it is so clean and cover a full sprctrum is Seal's CD, the white one with Kiss From A Rose on it. Noize, Sounds like you have more audio **** than you know what to do with. A old frien of mine has about $12,000 wrapped up in his home stereo. Totally stunning indeed.

Actually, the ideal way is with a SPL meter and setting them up accurately as opposed to using some source that you know. If the sub is not set up accurately it's gonna screw your mixes up horribly.

Noize its a 2001 GT. A good idea in october but that was before $3.00 a gallon gas prices here. Yeah that sound system rocks but I think I would rather have yours! Man that sounds nice. If I could hook my Pod up to my car I would have to find someone else to drive on roadtrips. :)

Carbonic Steve Vai is one of my all time favorites and thanks to this thread its what I'm listening to right now. Amazing musician.

Thanks for that link dB! I was looking for something like that. I wanted to set up my home theater system too.
