Is this too compressed/limited to anybody else?

My band just got finished with the mastering process on our demo and I'm trying to decide if I like the "Punchiness" the engineer was raving about or if it takes away from the dynamics a whole heck of a lot. We're a metal band, so if you're not a fan of screaming, you'd be doing yourself a favor skipping this one :)

Listen here (you'll have to right-click/save it, as the server doesn't like streaming so much):

insanarchist.shackspace.com/everest/track2.mp3
insanarchist.shackspace.com/everest/track3.mp3
insanarchist.shackspace.com/everest/track4.mp3

On a side-note, we haven't distributed these anywhere in any form but streaming on myspace, so do me a favor and don't throw these around the internet too much, please :)

I am downloading them tonight and will give them a listen tommorrow. No worries on tossing em around the internet. That would be kinda piraty in my eyes anyway.

Well you did say "if your not a fan of screaming... walk on by" :D

1st song: I gave a listen anyhow and my opinion is no it's not overcompressed. The drums sound awesome, the guitars sound pretty good once they all come. The beginning sounds weak though, I'd eq that one with more upper mid's while it's by itself to give more power to it. Personally a bit more upper mid's on the guitars all around wouldn't hurt, not much just so they have a bit more edge.

2nd song: This one sounds better to me all around.

3rd: Sounds about like the 2nd one, mix is pretty good, still I think the guitars are a little muddy.

4th: Like the 2nd and 3rd.

I'm only commenting on the mix, cause this totally isn't something I'd listen too, sounds good though if one likes this genre.

I would say the compression is pretty much right on, but the guitars need more power. Raising some upper mids like Dan suggested is my first thought. Overall, I like the songs, I'm happy to see that you use chords other than power chords. I havent listened to them in a good while, but I think overall, you guys sound like the band "Bloodbath" with just a touch of "Opeth" in the guitar chords.

I must agree with Goldenmean here on the use of something other then the standard run of power chords. Very nice in that department indeed. As for the punchiness being to much. I think he has done a pretty good job, there is still some life in there.

The only problem I am hearing is possibly the drums on track 1 were bit too out front of the mix, not an absolute distraction but the mp3 could be hiding or emphasizing some of it as well, so take that with a grain of salt.

Track 2 was a bit more level overall, the guitars, drums seemed well set together in the mix, the bass may have been slightly low on that mix though. I liked the acoustic/violyn break, nice touch indeed and it sounded mixed very well.

Track 3, again good levels for the most part, guitars seemed a bit more as they should be. Again the bass was a little back in the mix to me. The drums although very audible and present seemed to be sitting behind everything in the mix.

Track 4 the guitars seemed allright here as well. The bass was a bit more present then in the other tracks here. Drums were fairly well placed other then the kick seemed a bit thin on this one.

Again take most of this with a grain of salt as an mp3 can be very decieving depending on the encoding used and many other contributing factors.

Good stuff though indeed.
