i dont know much about home recording, and im intrested to learn more. i used to go to studios to record. but now im cheap. heheh.. i was planning to buy my own stuff:
-Alesis ion synthesizer
-Mbox 2(pro tools included) or Line6 toneport
-MIC (dont know wat brand to buy)
-2 monitor (dont know still)

what else do i need for just to record a good
quality of my music.

ive read some of the topics here about mbox dat it has a sound card built in it, so i guess i dnt need to buy a sound card for my pc anymore. and does the mbox 2 has a midi input? coz i believe the mbox 1 dont have one. i still need to buy external cho cho to connect the midi separately.

thank you for your replies....

Welcome to HRC first off.

Before I give you any details can you tell us what type of music you will be recording. How many instruments at once and any details you think might help you make a wise choice in gear.

Ah, very nice combination of genre's there. A lot based on electronic music. So yes the Ion would work very well for you. It is a very tweakable synth and the presets are very good as well when your not in the mood to create your own patch.

If you are looking to actually use midi to do sequancing you might want to look into Project 5 from Cakewalk. The software synths it includes would be right up your alley and work very well alongside the Ion. Project 5 will record both audio and midi as well as mix them both. And it comes with a large arsenal of FX as well as top notch software synths.

AS for the audio interface itself. I should ask this then. Will you be recording electric/acoustic guitars and possibly bass as well? I assume you will also record vocals too? If so the UX-2 from Line 6 would be a great interface to use for that. Guitar and bass amp modeling and effects. And some astounding mic pre amp models as well. I own several large high end audio interfaces and find myself using the UX-2 over them a lot of the time. But yes, a lot of the 2 channel audio interfaces do not come with midi i/o so that can be solved with a simple little USB midi i/o device which can be had pretty cheap. Under $30.00 for a brand new one.

If you take a look in the article archives hear we just recently reviewed both the UX devices from Line 6 as well as Project 5 from Cakewalk. If you need a link let me know and I'll post one up for you.

I do a lot in those same genres of music and Project 5 is my go to software for most of that.

greetings sir noize or paul?

honestly, i havent played a synth before in my life. so after i get my own gear, ill experiment with it and make some patches if i know how. hehehe..

and yes, i will put electric, acoustic, bass ang vox to my piece. i believe i can use the synth to use as my bass since i dont have a bass guitar dat i own. am i ryt?
so when recording, i will not use ableton live from line 6; ill use project 5 instead? does line6 UX2 will go along well with project 5?

it would be great if ull give me a link to the article archives sir.

thank you so much for the reply. c",)

Yes you can use the synth bass patches for bass no problem. Project 5 comes with Dimmension which has some astounding bass patches, both synth type and regular bass as well as acoustic bass. And any other instrument you can think of for use in any kind of music. As well as several other killer software synths.

Yes I use my UX-2 with PRoject 5 all the time without any problems.

Here are the links to the reviews as well as links to the products themselves.

I just got an add from Cakewalk. It appears that you can purchase Project 5 version 2 for $99.00 and add Dimension Pro sampler synth for another $99.00. I believe it uses an email promotion code. Let me know if that interest you and I will try and locate the promotion code to use when ordering from the Cakewalk website.

No you dont need to buy the Dimmension Pro part of it as the regular version of Dimension is allready packaged with Project 5.

Yes the Ion will do just fine on its own.

I'll have a look tommorrow and give you a couple low dollar ones to choose from. Otherwise have a look at our Studio Equipment section here. www.homerecordingconnecti...pment_front.php

There are tons of good choices in all price arnges there.

hello again,

ive read thru d links and there both impresive.

what is the difference between the line6 and the mbox2? u said before if im recording some bass, acoustic, electric, its better for line6. whats wrong with mbox2?

i also look thru equipment link. i found some $100+, $200+ for mic. but do they have a good quality of sound? also n the monitors.. im no expert in picking good equipment. so i need your help here. hehehe..

Well the differance between the M-Box 2 and the Line 6 UX-2 is about $250.00 US. The M-Box 2 is WAY over priced for what you actually get. And you do not get the guitar, bass and pre amp sims or the effects that are built right in and dont cost you any CPU power. With the M-Box you are going to suck up CPU power using the DSP effects in their software.

For your requirements you dont need the M-Box really. ADd the price of Project 5 into the equation and your still saving money over buying the M-Box and you now have software synths and an unlimited track count for audio and midi recording. Plus way more effects.

IF I have some time this weekend I will try and look up a couple good moniter sets for you.

What kind of price range are you looking to spend on nearfield moniters?

www.homerecordingconnecti...Studio+Monitors
Here is the page for some Active type moniters, meaning they are self amplified as I will assume you do not have a moniter amplifer. Have a look at a few of those and if I have time I will try and pick a couple pair that might work in your price range. You will honestly not get the best quality for a low price, but you can find some taht will work and you can learn on.

www.homerecordingconnecti...ser+Microphones
And here is a page with some good Large Diaphragm Condensor mic's. Again you can browse through them and see what might work for you price wise. One I can recomend that is a good all around budget mic is the Audio Technica AT2020.

Well, both the M-Audio BX5A and the Behringer B2030A are very good choices. They have gotten pretty good reviews aroun dhere from the few people that have choosen them.

AS for needing an external pre amp, the answer really would be no. If you are going to go with the Line 6 Toneport UX-2 then it allready has some killer high end Pre amp models built right in. I use them frequantly these days and am enjoying not having to patch out to a seperate pre amp and back.

i c. how bout this.

>KRK RP8 Rokit Powered 2-Way Active Monitor
zZounds Top Selling Item!
List Price: $499.00
zZounds Price: $249.95
KRK’s new Rokit Powered studio monitors provide a level of precision and performance unheard of in monitors in this class.

is this better than the M-Audio Bx5A or Behringer B2030A? coz i saw many in youtube.com videos of home recordng people uses KRK. i dont know wat model though. but i know its a KRK.

so the list to buy are:
>Alesis ion
>USB midi i/o
>line6 UX2
>Audio Technica AT2020
>2 monitors

this is it? then im ready? i cant wait to buy this stuff and record. hehehe..

Well, yes the KRK RP8 will be better sound wise as they do have a larger driver set up and do give a flatter sound then the other 2 I mentioned above. But I assumed they might be a little more then you wanted to spend.

Indeed the list looks good to go. The UX-2 will come with Ableton Live Lite which you can start recording with. But I would definatley look into Cakewalks Project 5 down the road as I think it will be a much better recording software for you in the end.

one last thing, it just came up to my mind. what do you prefer, MS2000B or Alesis ion? my brother dont want me to buy MS2000 coz its an OLD model. but i dont know wat its capable of. is it better than Alesis ion?

i like also the Nord Lead 2x but it doesnt have a vocoder. or does it? coz i want a synth that i can play on stage with vocoder.

Well the MS2000B has been updated. it now has the vocoder mic onboard. But that said, it doesnt really compare to the Ion. The keyboard itself is smaller, and its limited in options compared to the Ion.

As for the Clavia Nord Lead 2x, well that is another monster unto itself. Yes, it can blow away the Ion on some aspects. But it does not have the vocoder, which the ions is 40 voice and the MS is only 16. But the Nord is also much more expensive as well.

Just a side not on this as I am in the market for some powered nearfield monitors also. I believe that $249 price tag on the KRK is for one monitor, not a pair. I believe the Behringer's come as a pair for the price.

Hey captain, sweetwater's still got the powered tannoy reveals, for 500.

I had the unpowered before, and liked them much. I have the powered now, but alas, i'm still building the studio, so they're not set up. Lot's of studios have used them, with good results, though there's a few out there who don't like them.

They have a newer line out now, so these are one rev old, but still pretty darn nice, in my opinion. specially for the price.

Oh wow, that's over my price range atm. Me and the wife are expecting in october but I have to buy something as I can no longer mix with headphones.

I'm looking to spend about $300, what do yall think of this.

Would I get better sound with the...

KRK RP5's - 300+shipping to AK :(
Behringer 2030a - 280
Behringer 2031a - 340

Keep in mind I do no digital work as far as Midi goes so the boomiest thing I will have will be kick and bass guitar and will not be dipping into the 60hz or below range. I kinda have the KRK in mind as I can always add a sub to them later but if anyone owns either behringer model I'd appreciate your input.

I have the 2031A and can recommend them. I admit these are the first pair of moitors I have owned but i must say to me they give a relitily good flat respons once you have set them up for the room

Behringer do a sub as well for further expansion
