Sonar 5 - Midi controller issue

hey guys! this could possibly be the first of a slew of soundcard setting/midi questions i may have, as i just finally bought a midi controller and some new programs.

my soundcard is an Audigy 2 Platinum, 24 bit - seems like it should be fine for what i'm doing, i've never had a problem in the past with it.

the main issue i'm having right now is in sonar 5, i'm trying to use my controller through a soft synths Plugin (Kontakt Player jazz piano VST) .. i think i've armed it correctly, but when the piano prog pops up the controller is not recognized through it.. so i of course cannot record anything. it does however respond to just clicking the notes with my mouse. The controller communicates fine with that program externally. does anyone know what it is i'm doing wrong?

after that the other issue i'm having is constand 'Dropouts' .. what are these, and how can i stop them? thanks!

chris, first I'll aks if you used the Synth Rack to open the Kontakt player? If so did you let it open a midi and audio track? Also, are you running it as a VSTi pluggin or ReWired?

Each software synth needs 2 things to function, an audio track for the synths outputs and a midi track to send it note information. You need to make sure the midi tracks input in Sonar is set to see your midi interface, or if the controller is USB it should give its midi ports name in the list. As well you need to assgin the midi tracks output to the software synth, in this case Kontakt.

I use Sonar 5 PE and Kontakt as well and using the synth rack it opens up ready to go when I choose it from the list of availabel instruments.

Also make sure the synths audio track is assigned to the audigy outputs.

AS for the dropouts, I cant help you much there. The blame for that is pretty much on the Audigy itself as they are not really meant for this type of use. Even though it is the platinum version and claims to be pro quality it is not. You can try and mess with the buffer settings for it by raising it to maybe 512 or something. OR adjust the latecny slider in Sonars audio options page. But that is about the extent of it. That and make sure your PC is up to the task and meets and least the minimum system requirements for Sonar.

hey noise.
thanks for your reply, unfortunately i'm still a bit confused. i'm using sonar 5 PE as well, but i'm pretty new at this particular program so navigation is a bit difficult at times. i'd put up some screencaps if i was able to use HTML but i dont think thats an option either.

I've opened up the audio/midi tracks through the synth rack and it automatically sees the 'Garritan Jazz VST' but if i double click on ip - when the piano opens up it still says "no controller" .. do i have to assign this as an effect? and do i have to do anything else in the Midi track for it to be recognized?

i have a few options in my Midi Devices panel, for inputs my options are:
a) 1:EDIROL PCR MIDI IN
b) 1:EDIROL PCR 1
c) 1:EDIROL PCR 2
d) SB Audigy 2 ZS MIDI IO [DE80]

... and for outputs:

a) SB Audigy 2 ZS MIDI IO [DE80]
b) SB Audigy 2 ZS Synth B [DE80]
c) SB Audigy 2 ZS Synth A [DE80]
d) Microsoft MIDI Mapper
e) 1:EDIROL PCR MIDI OUT
f) 1:EDIROL PCR

phew! i don't know how else to explain my options other then showing you them all. sorry for any confusion, and again thanks for your response!

lemme get this strait, sonar isn't recognizing your controller and therefore you can't play your v-instruments?

[edit] after a re-read, you can ignore this first part]

have you tried Options > midi > then select your controller and move it to the top of the list....do this for both in and output and it should see it....

after that in edit view (main view) expand the channel so you can see everything on the midi channel, there's a drop down menu labled "I" for input and "O" for output, make sure your controller is selected.

hope that helps

Yep, as WYD stated you need to make sure and have the Edirol PCR midi in and out selected and move them to the top in the options section he stated. This will make them active to be selected by the synth rack. And then in the track view you will need to make sure in the midi in portion of the midi track that the same name is selected as you midi in port, and midi out of that same track should be assigned to the synth name you are trying to play.

You will also want to hit the midi active button on the uper left of the track view to make that track available to the controller for it to play live and record midi data.
