Monitor/converter question

I am trying to set up a pair of consumer quality stereo speakers for comparative monitoring with my mixes. I have many speakers with the +/- connections which use 16 gauge speaker wire. I would like to connect these to my system but I would like to find the most efficient way to do so. I have a surround sound reciever but this is large and takes up too much electricity for such a small task. I also doubt it would give an accurate stereo image.

I have a pair of 8ohm speakers that can handle 5-100 watts of power from an amp. I am curious if I can find some kind of wire converter box which will take a 1/4 jack or RCA and convert to speaker wire and then connect it to my PC preamp, and maybe that will provide power? Or can I get some kind of small but sufficient amp of some kind?

your pc's preamp will most definately not power those speakers, they are line level outputs....use your consumer reciever, or buy a cheap power amp....any 100 watt power amp will use roughly the same amount of electricity so don't let that be a factor in your decision...also don't worry about the reciever coloring the sound, it will because it's supposed to...if you've already got 'flat' monitors and want another set of speakers to hear, then coloration is fine, just aslong as you get to know them and their characteristics.

cheers

ok thanks wyd, I may just have to use my reciever, I just wanted to cut down on all of the equipment I had to fiddle with every time i want to do something.
