is it possible to rent kits? has anyone ever done this? if so, from who? im just trying to find out if this is a common thing or not. i called sam ash last year with this same problem--needing a kit on short notice--and the guy said 'nobody does that.'

Im pretty sure none of the larger companies like sam ash or musicians friend do that, but i do know that smaller stores might. The local store I go to rents out kit. They are terrible kits but they do rent them

wow so its possible. then i shall try the local small shops. the thing that made me stop calling places last year was that everyone was saying pretty directly 'ive never heard of that before,' and 'no one does that, sorry.'

i know two small shops i can try though, and theyre just drum shops.

thanks.

I've rented good quality kits from the www.rockshop.co.nz for recordings. Know that doesn't really apply, but it is possible.

We have several places here in Vancouver that rent out drum kits. Both Tom Lee and Long and McQuade rent them (not that it helps you if you are not from Vancouver)

forty, again I know its not much help but there are several places here as well. Used to be more but those shops are now no longer open. Eclipse concert systems was a great place for me in the day. As was a place called LaVonnes. But the son started running the place and it is now a crooked place only inhabitted by the rich or stupid people who dont care if they get ripped off.

it is good to know that you guys have rented drums. i was actually only looking for confirmation that these places exist one way or the other. now i can do a thorough check of all places without feeling hopeless. though im thinking that the people who are telling me 'no one does that' are maybe just really familiar with this town and there may in fact no place in orlando that does this. we will see.

thanks.

just a final update:

use craigslist for this kind of thing. i posted a wanted ad ('to rent a drum kit for one night') and got three responses.

the first guy who responded was the best, absolutely great older guy who seems to have a lot of experience working as a session guy with a lot of legendary performers and who claims to be the cousin of an classic artist whose name youd all know if i said it (hrc stuff shows up in google searches, so i wont--but his last name matches). anyway, he delivered a decent kit to my house--a full hour's drive from where he lives--and required only a donation of...get this...thirty dollars.

he said just gimme thirty, admission to the show, and all the cokes i can drink. he didnt show at the show after all, because it was late at night, but he drove all the way back out here two days later to pick up the kit.

apparently he does this pro-bono. a non-profit one man organization, a labor of love. has collected a ton of gear over the years and lends it out to schools, youth groups, whoever needs it. he kept saying 'its all about the music, man.'

the other two dudes were willing to rent to me, as well. it had never occurred to them, they said. so for future reference, if anyone is ever in my boat, needing an emergency drum set, dont forget about craigslist. post your own wanted ad.

So applying this to any gear would work. I didnt even think of the craiglist thing.

The guy sounds like a very nice guy. Wish there had been guys like that in my day. I could have saved a ton of money.

You could probably just ask around for local drummers, too. I get a little extra $$ renting - I've got a pretty esoteric collection (my gong has paid for itself now), but I'd rent a kit for a few days if I didn't have a gig scheduled. Drummers are always broke and looking!
