so im going recording some drum tracks at the weekend.
im going to have one bass mic and 4 condenser mics at my disposal.
My would people reccomend as the best set-up for this? Im using the bass drum pad from my electronic kit instead of my bass drum. Its a standard kit, 3 toms,snare,hats,3 crashes (left, right, centre) and ride.
Id appreciate any tips!

Feb 16, 2006 02:55 pm What type of mic's are they, if you're using a bass drum pad for the kick then what is the bass mic? We need some more info to help.

Feb 16, 2006 03:32 pm I've used one LDC with a bunch of dynamic mics, and I gotta say, the LDC picks up pretty much everything. I don't think you'll have much seperation between LDCs.
The first thing I'd try, is to just put 2 LDC out front of the kit, about shoulder high, facing the kit, but angled outward, away from each other. Hopefully that'll keep a stereo field.
I don't think 2 more would help you in this situation, unless you had a large, well treated (sonically) room. Otherwise, I'd keep it simple, as those LDC will be picking up alot.
I'm assuming the kick is tracked in a different fashion than a mic, so I didn't include it.

Feb 16, 2006 03:33 pm I suppose you could replace LDC with SDC in whatever fashion you need. I was assuming LDC in place of condensor.
Season to taste, serve warm =).

any final tips?!
Feb 17, 2006 02:36 pm ok none of those are condensor's.... so with those mic's, i'd close mic everything....you're gonna have troubble with the cymbals though...ya should find a way to put two of 'em overhead, or even just above the drummer's head in an wide XY configuration.
