dell inspiron 6000 laptop recording setup

hi,
am complete newbie too all this, my last computer compositions being on an amiga 500!
very simple really, i have a yamaha keyboard, with midi in/out and a dell inspiron 6000 laptop (specs 1.73 pentium m, 512 ddr2 ram, 60gb hd).
ive read that the onboard soundcard in the inspiron is no good for music.
so i need some kind of device to link the yamaha to the laptop, some kind of soundcard, and some kind of music software. (or a combination of the 3)
any ideas?

Welcome to HRC, themup.

Does your laptop have USB or Firewire? Or both? What you need is a decent external device such as a USB or Firewire interface. Something like www.homerecordingconnecti...+and+Windows%29

hiya,
have both usb 2.0 & firewire on lappy.
so if i have got this right:
an external midi interface allows the yamaha to talk to the laptop, but uses the laptop soundcard to process the information.
a midi interface with buit in audio does the above, but uses the built in audio as the soundcard to process the information and cuts out the onboard soundcard.
so for example i could buy
www.musiciansbuy.com/YAMA..._INTERFACE.html

but would need an external soundcard as well (coz ive heard that the built in soundcards on dell laptops are not too good for music stuff)

my best bet then is to get a combined midi interface/audio like the one you suggested?

thanks.

That would do the trick for you. It would cover both the midi and audio with one interface.
